Spain: Badalona Dracs lone undefeated team left in Spanish American Football League

The Badalona Dracs are now the only unbeaten team left in the 12 team Spanish League of American Football after routing the lowly Zaragoza Hurricanes 60-0 and taking sole possession of first place in the standings.

The only other team with an undefeated record heading into the sixth weekend of play in Spain was Madrid’s Osos Rivas, but they were downed 21-14 by the Coslada Camioneros.

In Barcelona, Dracs QB Hunter Correll had a field day throwing six touchdown passes while receiver  Javi Fernández hauled in two of those touchdown passes and adding two two-point conversions. Jorge Ruiz scored on a kickoff return while kicking a field goal and five PATs. Receivers Guillem García, Edu Morlans and Raúl Cernuda also scored.

Coslada Camioneros 21 – Osos Rivas 14

In Coslada, the Camioneros relied on their running game to take a 13-7 halftime lead with  Mexican QB Armando Morales doing most of the damage. He threw a touchdown pass to Emilio Ibáñez along with a two point conversion while keeping the Osos defense off balance. However, Osos quarterback Ryan Deal still found dangerous wide receiver Kevin Wiggins for both touchdowns and in fact the team from Madrid held a slim 14-13 lead with three minutes left in the contest.

But Jorge Félix Velasco scored for Coslada late in the game for the win.

LG OLED Las Rozas Black Demons 47 – Fuengirola Potros 20

The LG OLED Las Rozas Black Demons rebounded from their week five loss to the Murcia Cobras by dumping the Fuengirola Potros 47-20. Black Demons quarterback Trenton Jones threw for 288 yards and three touchdown passes, two to Evan Altizer (148 receiving yards) and one to Fernando Bujando. Jones added another on the ground while running back Marcos de la Mata scored two touchdowns and Carlos Granda added another.

For  Fuengirola Potros, QB Carlos Chaves threw two TD passes, with Juan Carlos Cortés and Salvador Jiménez, catching one each. one of them 84 yards.  Finnish player Jarno Elo also scored on a 10-yard run.

Murcia Cobras 40 – Granada Lions 0

The Murcia Cobras earned their fourth win of the season by blanking the Granada Lions 40-0. The Cobras jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead against the hapless Lions, and never looked back.

Cobras quarterback Adam Salvadori threw two touchdown passes to Cory Holmes in the first half and ran one in himself before giving way to young backup Álvaro Cánovas in the second half. The other first half score came from running back  Alejandro Amorós. Cánovas took advantage of the opportunity throwing his first ever touchdown pass in Spain’s top league, connecting with Pablo Serrano to increase the lead to 34-0.  José Antonio Castanedo  picked off an errant Granada pass and returned it all the way for a touchdown to round out the scoring.

Valencia Firebats – 33 – Mallorca Voltors 6

The Valencia Firebats earned a key win on the island of Mallorca, downing the host Mallorca Voltors 33-6. This was a key win for Valencia in order to keep pace and stay ahead of Mallorca in the standings. However, it was not easy as the teams were tied at halftime 6-6. The Firebats took a 13-6 lead heading into the final quarter but then broke the game wide open with three unanswered touchdowns.  Carlos Cervera, Alejandro Silvestre, Sergio León, Javier Martínez and Willem Andrés Jore scored the Valencian TDs, while Marc Amengual scored six points for Voltors.

Gijón Mariners 48 – Santiago Black Ravens 8

Finally, the Gijon Mariners earned their second victory of the season overwhelming the winless Santiago Black Ravens 48-8 to stay in contention for a playoff spot.

The Mariners found themselves trailing 6-0 early on as Santiago’s Oliver Vázquez scored. But then it was all Gijon with running back Javier Castañón scoring three rushing touchdowns and Pablo López, adding two. Quarterback Marcos Martinez threw four touchdown passes and ran another one in himself in the win.
