St. Louis Battlehawks host Louisville Kings with United Bowl berth at stake
The St. Louis Battlehawks host the Louisville Kings in a United Football League semifinal on Sunday, with a trip to the United Bowl hanging in the balance and two of the league’s most intriguing stories colliding in the postseason.
While Louisville enters as arguably the hottest team in the UFL, St. Louis counters with one of the league’s most dominant defenses and the advantage of playing in front of a packed Battledome crowd.
Kings arrive red hot
The Kings have been one of the league’s biggest surprises.
After opening the season 0-3, head coach Chris Redman’s team looked destined for a disappointing inaugural campaign. Instead, a quarterback change transformed the season.
Chandler Rogers took over the offense and immediately sparked a turnaround. Since becoming the starter, Rogers has helped lead Louisville to a 6-1 finish and a four-game winning streak entering the playoffs.
The running game has become the foundation of that success. Ian Wheeler finished fourth in the UFL with 370 rushing yards, while James Robinson added 300. During the current winning streak, the Kings have averaged 172 rushing yards per game.
Defensively, Louisville led the league with 17 takeaways. Corey Mayfield Jr. recorded four interceptions, while Cam Gill broke the UFL single-season sack record with 10 sacks.
Battlehawks leaning on defense
The identity of the Battlehawks remains unchanged.
St. Louis finished the regular season allowing only 19.6 points per game while surrendering a league-best 243.2 total yards per contest. The defensive front consistently controlled games, leading the UFL with 31 sacks.
Pita Taumoepenu, Demone Harris and Carlos Davis headline a unit that excels at disrupting opposing quarterbacks and shutting down rushing attacks.
That strength was on full display in the only regular-season meeting between these teams. The Battlehawks dominated the line of scrimmage, held Louisville to just 166 total yards, recorded six sacks and limited the Kings to only 12 rushing yards in a 16-3 victory.
Quarterbacks under pressure
Both quarterbacks enter the semifinal facing important questions.
For Louisville, Rogers must prove he can succeed against the defense that handed him his toughest outing of the season.
For St. Louis, Luis Perez continues to search for consistency after arriving in a midseason trade. Perez threw for 1,023 yards in four starts but also tossed six interceptions and was sacked seven times in Week 10.
The matchup between Cam Gill and the Battlehawks offensive line could be one of the game’s defining battles.
Momentum meets defense
This game presents a fascinating contrast.
The Kings have not lost since Week 6 and have become one of the league’s most explosive offenses. The Battlehawks have spent the entire season proving they can slow down anyone.
Throw in Hakeem Butler, who led the UFL with 641 receiving yards, and the electric atmosphere of the Battledome, and all the ingredients are there for a memorable semifinal.
One team arrives carrying momentum. The other brings the league’s toughest defense. By the end of Sunday, one will be headed to the United Bowl.
