Sweden: Örebro Black Knights rally to defeat Stockholm Mean Machines for pivotal road win
The Örebro Black Knights (1-1) pulled off a stunning 23-20 upset road victory over the Stockholm Mean Machines (1-1) in early round Swedish Superserien action this past weekend.
The win atones for the lopsided loss Örebro had suffered at the hands of the Carlstad Crusaders to start the season and demonstrated the Black Knights’ grit and determination as they rallied to secure their first win of the year.
Örebro running back Filip Jonsson was a standout, rushing for 111 yards, while quarterback Viktor Ekberg threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns, including a crucial late-game score to Johannes Lindeus. On the other side, Stockholm’s David Ottander rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown, contributing to the Mean Machines’ early lead. Despite the strong individual performances from the home team, Örebro’s defense stepped up when it mattered most, ultimately sealing the victory in a hard-fought battle.
Slow start for both teams
The game began with a defensive battle, as both teams struggled to find their rhythm. The Mean Machines managed to score first as quarterback Dawson Herl (187 yards, 2 TDs) connected with Senay Tadesse late in the second quarter, giving them a slim 6-0 lead at halftime. Örebro’s defense held strong, but their offense faced challenges, failing to capitalize on opportunities in the red zone.
Turning the tide
The second half saw a shift in momentum. The Mean Machines extended their lead to 12-0 with a touchdown run by Ottander. However, Örebro responded quickly, igniting their offense with a touchdown from Rasmus Brolin, followed by a safety after a mishap on a punt by Stockholm. Suddenly, the score was 12-9 midway through the third quarter, and the Black Knights were back in the game.
Clutch plays seal the victory
Örebro took the lead for the first time with little time left in the third with a touchdown as Ekberg found Lindeus, making it 16-12. The Mean Machines fought back ss the fourth quarter unfolded, regaining the lead at 20-16 with another touchdown from Herl to veteran Matt Retzlaff. But Örebro wasn’t done yet. With just over two minutes left, Lindeus hauled in a 48 yard scoring pass from Ekberg for the game-winning touchdown, sealing the victory at 23-20.
Although Örebro was outgained in total yards (328 to 325) and first downs (22 to 18), they took advantage of penalties and turnovers, capitalizing on their chances, demonstrating the importance of efficiency in crucial moments.
With this win, Örebro looks to build momentum as they prepare for their next matchup against the Göteborg Giants. Meanwhile, the Mean Machines will get ready to face the Tyresö Royal Crowns.
