UFL: Birmingham Stallions edge Dallas Renegades in overtime thriller

In a nail-biting United Football League showdown, the Birmingham Stallions (3-4) defeated the Dallas Renegades (3-4) 24-17 in overtime, marking their second consecutive victory. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Birmingham tying the game late in regulation and then sealing the win in the extra period.

Early Struggles for the Stallions

The game started on a rough note for the Stallions as quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson fumbled the snap on their opening drive, leading to an interception by Steven Jones Jr. The Renegades capitalized on the turnover with a methodical 15-play, 60-yard drive, capped off by a one-yard touchdown run from Ellis Merriweather, giving Dallas an early 7-0 lead.

Birmingham struggled offensively in the first quarter, managing only five plays. However, the tide began to turn when Thompson-Robinson connected with Daewood Davis for a 46-yard touchdown, narrowing the gap to 10-7 by halftime.

Fourth Quarter Drama

The second half saw both defenses step up, resulting in a series of punts. But in the fourth quarter, Thompson-Robinson led a drive that ended with a 40-yard field goal from Anders Carlson, tying the game at 10-10. The Renegades quickly responded with a 15-yard touchdown run from Merriweather, putting them back in the lead at 17-10.

With time running out, Thompson-Robinson orchestrated another impressive drive, culminating in a touchdown pass to Jaydon Mickens, tying the game once again with just two minutes left.

Overtime Heroics

In overtime, the Stallions won the coin toss and took the first possession. Thompson-Robinson showcased his skills, scrambling into the end zone for a touchdown. The Renegades had a chance to respond but were thwarted by a sack from Isaac Ukwu.

Thompson-Robinson then sealed the game with a bullet pass to Mickens for the winning touchdown, marking the Stallions‘ first lead of the game.

With this victory, Birmingham keeps its playoff hopes alive, while Dallas faces a tough road ahead with four straight losses. Jaydon Mickens was the standout performer for the Stallions, finishing with six receptions for 82 yards and two touchdowns. The Stallions will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to host the Columbus Destroyers next Sunday.
