UFL Season Update: Week Eight Delivers Thrills and Surprises
With Week Eight of the United Football League (UFL) season behind us, the excitement moving forward is palpable. This week delivered exactly what the league needed: thrilling finishes, playoff clinches, and massive upsets. With only two regular season games remaining, every team remains mathematically alive in the playoff race.
Current playoff picture
The playoff race is heating up, with the Orlando Storm leading the pack at 6-2, having already clinched a postseason berth. The St. Louis Battlehawks and DC Defenders are both sitting at 5-3, while the Birmingham Stallions and Louisville Kings are tied at 4-4, with Birmingham holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Dallas Renegades and Houston Gamblers are both 3-5, and the Columbus Aviators round out the standings at 2-6.
Orlando Storm clinch playoff spot
The Orlando Storm kicked off Week Eight with a Friday night victory over the Dallas Renegades at Fort Hood, marking the first-ever professional football game played on a military base. Quarterback Jack Plummer led the charge with 308 total yards and two rushing touchdowns, including an explosive 71-yard score. Running backs Jashaun Corbin and KJ Hamler also contributed with rushing touchdowns of their own. Chris Rowland had another standout performance, catching nine passes for 90 yards, putting him on track to lead the UFL in all-purpose yards for the second consecutive season. With this win, the Storm became the first team to clinch a postseason berth, marking head coach Anthony Becht’s third straight trip to the playoffs.
Upsets galore on Saturday
Saturday quickly turned into upset city around the UFL. The Louisville Kings pulled off a thrilling victory against the DC Defenders at Lynn Family Stadium, winning 33-30. After a 36-minute rain delay, the game exploded with action. Ty Scott opened the scoring with a 41-yard touchdown reception, but DC responded immediately with a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Tyler Hudson. Unfortunately for the Defenders, quarterback Jordan Ta’amu suffered an injury and missed the final three quarters. The Kings capitalized on this, with their defense coming alive, recording four takeaways and four sacks.
Meanwhile, the Houston Gamblers stunned the St. Louis Battlehawks, keeping them from clinching a playoff spot in front of a packed Battledome crowd. Houston’s defense was relentless, with Jontre Kirklin scoring his first touchdown of the season and Kary Vincent Jr. delivering a pick-six. The Battlehawks struggled offensively, finishing just 1-for-6 in the red zone.
Birmingham Stallions keep rolling
Week Eight concluded on a brutally hot Sunday afternoon in Birmingham, where the Stallions‘ defense powered the team to a 7-3 victory over the Columbus Aviators. With turf temperatures reportedly reaching 140 degrees, the heat became a major factor as both teams combined for just 17 points. Steven Gilmore made a game-changing play by blocking a field goal and returning it for a touchdown, while Tae Crowder led the defense with 11 tackles, marking his fourth double-digit tackle game of the season.
Looking ahead to Week Nine
Week Nine kicks off with the Storm hosting the DC Defenders on Friday night, followed by a rematch between the Stallions and Aviators on Saturday. The weekend wraps up with the Kings hosting the Renegades and a rematch between the Battlehawks and Gamblers. With the playoff picture still wide open, fans can expect more excitement as the season races toward its conclusion.
