Undefeated Seinäjoki Crocodiles host Porvoon Butchers in pivotal Maple League rematch

The unbeaten Seinäjoki Crocodiles (4-0) welcome the defending champion Porvoon Butchers (3-2) to Wirokit Stadium on Saturday night for a highly anticipated Finnish Maple League rematch. Their first meeting needed overtime before the Crocodiles escaped Porvoon with a 41-38 victory, ending the Butchers’ winning streak that had lasted nearly two years.

Crocodiles face coaching change

The Crocodiles have opened the season with four straight victories, but they will enter this matchup without head coach Jaime Hill who was suspended for three games. Offensive coordinator Leon La Deaux has been listed as the acting head coach for Saturday’s game.

How much that change affects Seinäjoki remains to be seen. The Crocodiles have succeeded through a balanced team effort rather than relying on one player to carry the offense or defense.

Quarterback Christopher Fowler delivered one of his strongest performances of the season in the first meeting with Porvoon, completing 62 percent of his passes and throwing four touchdowns. Alex Jämsen caught six passes for 117 yards and two scores, while Mauricio Porcha recorded 10 receptions and returned a kick for a touchdown.

Porcha’s availability is uncertain, which could remove an important weapon from the Crocodiles’ offense. Defensively, Aatu Tuokko finished the first matchup with 10.5 tackles.

Butchers seek a response

The Butchers arrive in Seinäjoki in an unfamiliar position after having lost two consecutive games. Their offense has continued to produce points, but late mistakes have prevented the defending champions from closing out victories.

Quarterback Donovan Isom and running back Christian Powell remain among the league’s leading offensive performers. New receiver Isaiah Grice made his debut in the loss to the Helsinki Roosters, although his role was limited in his first appearance.

Mikko Seppänen made it clear after that defeat that the Butchers need to show a greater determination to finish games. A third straight loss would leave Porvoon with significant work to do in the race for home-field advantage in the playoffs.

Defense brings playmaking ability

The Butchers still feature several of the league’s most productive defenders. Timi Nuikka leads the Maple League with 42 tackles, while Kaapo Viuha has recorded six interceptions. Dal’Mont Gourdine tops the league with 7.5 sacks.

That unit will need to pressure Fowler while limiting the explosive plays that hurt Porvoon two weeks ago.

The first matchup showed how evenly matched these teams can be. The Crocodiles have the unbeaten record and home field, but the Butchers have enough talent and urgency to turn Saturday night into another four-quarter battle.
