Hungary: Hungarian Bowl QBs a contrast in styles

The Hungarian Football League title game pits the defending (2019) champion Fehérvár Enthroners against the 2018 champions, the Budapest Wolves this Saturday, July 10.

Enthroners’ signal-caller, Márk Erős is going for his second gold medal, while Márk Bencsics of the Budapest Wolves is looking to snatch his third Hungarian Bowl trophy and fourth championship title.

Two quarterbacks with two different styles. Bencsics is one of the most experienced playmakers in Hungary. The Hungarian National Team’s number one QB is heading into his fifth championship game after a controversial regular season. Although the Wolves’ offense has a lot of potential in it, at some times did not really live up to the expectations. Bencsics is considered to be one of the most mobile and accurate passers in the HFL. This season he had the most attempts and only half of the them were successful (63/113) with seven touchdown passes and 5 giveaways. Still, the Wolves’ quarterback led the league in passing yardage (839 in 4 games).

Márk Erős’ is entered his third season in the HFL, although he missed out most on the championship-winning year due to an injury. Due to his physical traits, he is more of a rushing quarterback. He completed roughly the same percentage of passes as Bencsics, but he did not have as many attempts. He finished the season completing 28 of 43 passes for 523 yards and nine touchdowns.

His physicality and mobility helped the team during the season. He ran for 176 yards and two touchdowns. Bencsics on the other hand, despite not scoring a touchdown, rushed for a league-best seven yards a carry although he also fumbled three times.

The two quarterbacks faced each other once during the season with Eros and the Enthoners coming away with a 26-0 win in Székesfehérvár.

The venue for the Hungarian Bowl may be the same but the stakes are much higher.
