Danube Dragons dominate Vikings in Austrian Football League season-opening win
The Danube Dragons (1-0) kicked off their Austrian Football League season with a commanding 35–14 victory over the rival Vienna Vikings (0-1), avenging last year’s Austrian Bowl loss in a decisive early statement at home.
Vikings strike first on stunning play
The game opened with a wild swing as Vienna’s Luis Ecker picked up a fumble from Danube quarterback Walter Kuhlenkamp and returned it 98 yards for a touchdown, giving the visitors an early 7–0 lead. However, the Dragons responded by settling in and controlling the game from that point forward.
Dragons offense erupts after slow start
After the early turnover, Danube’s offense caught fire, scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter and three more in the third. Kuhlenkamp connected with receivers Moritz Dungler (twice), Uzay Nafile, and Samuel Imarhiagbe, while also adding a rushing touchdown himself. The Dragons’ defense locked down after the initial score, keeping the Vikings off the board until a late Russell Minor-Shaw to Maximilian Moser connection in the fourth.
Coaches react to opening result
Danube head coach Michael Hönig acknowledged the strong performance but emphasized the long road ahead, calling the season “a marathon, not a sprint”. Vienna’s Benjamin Sobotka noted the uncharacteristic mistakes, stating, “It was one of those games where, if something goes wrong, it feels like everything goes wrong,” while vowing his team would respond. The win gives the Dragons early momentum in what promises to be another competitive AFL season.
