Amsterdam Crusaders overwhelm Utrecht Dominators to capture 23rd Dutch title

The Amsterdam Crusaders successfully defended their title Sunday, defeating the Utrecht Dominators 35–13 in Tulip Bowl XL to complete a perfect domestic season and capture the 23rd Dutch championship in club history. The Dominators, playing in the first championship game in their club history, struggled under the pressure from the opening possession, and the experienced Crusaders took full advantage by racing to a 23-point first-quarter lead they would never relinquish.

Quarterback Dylan Bakker threw three touchdown passes during the opening period and later ran for another score as the Crusaders completed an undefeated domestic season and secured the 23rd Dutch championship in club history. The outcome was effectively decided before Utrecht recorded a first down.

The Dominators went three-and-out after receiving the opening kickoff and compounded the poor start with a disastrous punt that gave Amsterdam possession inside the Utrecht 30-yard line.

Bakker immediately punished the mistake, connecting with Olivier Lugier for a 38-yard touchdown. The extra point made it 7–0.

Utrecht’s second possession was no better. Another three-and-out was followed by a blocked punt that resulted in a safety, extending Amsterdam’s advantage to 9–0.

The Dominators were not simply losing the field-position battle. They were digging their own grave.

Crusaders capitalize

Amsterdam again capitalized on the short field when Bakker found Jamairo Chirino for a 26-yard touchdown. Another successful conversion increased the margin to 16–0.

Utrecht’s third series included consecutive false-start penalties before Crusaders linebacker Brian Snoek ended the possession with a sack. Forced to punt from near its own end zone, Utrecht managed to move the ball only to its own 48, again handing Amsterdam excellent field position.

Running back Sidney Kunst carried the ball 25 yards to the Utrecht 20 before Bakker completed a six-yard touchdown pass to Lugier. The extra point gave the Crusaders a remarkable 23–0 lead before the first quarter had ended.

Utrecht’s first first down came only after an Amsterdam personal foul. The Dominators would not cross midfield under their own power until their second possession of the third quarter. (Gridiron)

The Crusaders threatened to extend the lead during the second quarter after Ricco Bos produced a 34-yard punt return. Amsterdam eventually faced fourth-and-goal from the Utrecht eight-yard line, but Bakker was tackled short of the end zone.

That defensive stand provided the Dominators with their first meaningful success of the afternoon. Utrecht also received an interception from Tim Hellemons on a deep Bakker pass, helping keep the second quarter scoreless and sending the teams into halftime with Amsterdam still leading 23–0.

The reprieve did not last.

Crusaders finish the job

Amsterdam opened the second-half scoring with a field goal to make it 26–0. Bakker then completed his four-touchdown performance by running into the end zone from two yards out. The conversion stretched the lead to 33–0.

With the championship long since decided, Utrecht finally gave its supporters something to celebrate in the fourth quarter.

The Dominators called a halfback option pass, and No. 79 found No. 87 for an 82-yard touchdown. The extra point reduced the deficit to 33–7 and prevented the shutout.

Utrecht then recovered an Amsterdam fumble and scored again on a 22-yard touchdown pass. The extra-point attempt was blocked, however, and the Crusaders returned the loose ball the length of the field for two points, producing the unusual final score of 35–13.

The two late touchdowns made the final margin more respectable, but they could not disguise the gulf between the teams.

Experience makes the difference

Utrecht had earned its historic championship-game appearance by defeating Lightning Leiden 24–0 in the semifinal, but the Dominators looked overwhelmed by the occasion. Poor punts, penalties and an inability to move the chains handed Amsterdam repeated short fields, and the defending champions were far too experienced to waste them.

For the Crusaders, it was another demonstration of the ruthless efficiency that has made the club the dominant force in Dutch American football.

Bakker accounted for all four Amsterdam touchdowns, Lugier caught two scoring passes and the Crusaders’ defense and special teams ensured that Utrecht spent almost the entire first half trapped in its own territory.

Before the Dominators had found their footing, Tulip Bowl XL was already over.
