The Allgäu Comets (1-10) host the Saarland Hurricanes (2-9) Saturday in Kempten with the German Football League regular season reaching its final weekend and both teams fighting to avoid the playdowns.

The situation leaves no mystery for the Comets. Saarland carries a 25-point advantage from the first meeting, meaning Allgäu must win by at least 26 points to move ahead of the Hurricanes in the direct comparison and climb out of seventh place in the GFL South.

Comets need points in a hurry

That margin forces Allgäu to attack this game differently than a normal regular-season matchup. Simply winning won’t be enough. The Comets need touchdowns, stops and enough separation on the scoreboard to erase the damage from the first meeting.

Doing it with a depleted roster makes the assignment even tougher.

The Comets have lost several key players during a difficult season, and quarterback Brad Jones remains questionable heading into the finale. His availability could have a major impact on an offense that needs to move the ball consistently and, above all, protect possession.

Turnovers hurt Allgäu badly in the first meeting. This time, every lost possession also burns valuable time in a game where the Comets cannot afford to spend the afternoon chasing both the Hurricanes and the 25-point deficit.

Young players step into bigger roles

With the roster thinned out, Allgäu has increasingly worked players from its U19 program into the senior lineup.

Linebacker Samuel Vilela Vieira and defensive end Dominik Alechin have joined a defense featuring Beau Priegnitz and Silas Arnold, while wide receiver Samuel Kraljevic has been added to the passing attack.

That defense will have to account for more than one target. While Youngblood entered the first matchup as Saarland’s obvious receiving threat, the Hurricanes were able to spread the football around and get their younger players involved.

Hurricanes hold the advantage

For the Hurricanes, the equation is much more comfortable. They don’t necessarily need to beat Allgäu to finish ahead of them — they need to protect the advantage they built in the first meeting.

But sitting on that cushion could be dangerous against a Comets team with no reason to play conservatively.

Both teams have endured seasons that fell well short of expectations, and Saturday gives each one a final opportunity to change how the regular season ends.

For Saarland, protecting its 25-point edge means avoiding the playdowns. For Allgäu, there is only one route out: win big at home.
