LIVESTREAM Germany PPV: Regensburg Phoenix @ Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, Aug. 29, 16:00 CET (4 pm, 10 am ET)

The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (11-0) put their perfect German Football League record on the line Saturday when they host the Regensburg Phoenix (5-6) at OPTIMA Sportpark in the final regular-season game for both teams.

The Unicorns have already locked up the GFL South title and home-field advantage for the quarterfinals. Regensburg, meanwhile, has secured fifth place and its spot in the league after putting together a strong second half of its first GFL season.

Unicorns shift toward playoff mode

With first place secured, the scoreboard won’t change Schwäbisch Hall’s postseason position, but the afternoon still matters.

The Unicorns have gone through the regular season without a loss and now get one final game to sharpen their execution before the playoffs. After two weekends without a game, getting the offense moving and the defense back into game rhythm will be part of the job.

There is also an unbeaten regular season sitting there for the taking.

Schwäbisch Hall showed Regensburg just how difficult it can be to keep pace in their first meeting. The Unicorns went into Regensburg on July 4 and came away with a 42-14 victory, giving the Phoenix a clear picture of what awaits them in the rematch.

Phoenix have grown since first meeting

The Phoenix team coming to Schwäbisch Hall is no longer the same group still finding its feet early in its debut GFL season.

A four-game winning streak during the second half of the schedule carried Regensburg away from the bottom of the division and secured its place in the league before the finale.

Quarterback Cameron Yowell leads the offense, with British running back Nebechi Abana giving the Phoenix another weapon on the ground. Defensively, linebackers Mika Stieger and Julian Herrera have been important pieces of a unit that will face its biggest test of the closing weeks.

One last test before the playoffs

For Regensburg, knocking off the unbeaten division champion would put a huge finish on an already successful first season in Germany’s top league.

To have that chance, the Phoenix need to protect the football and avoid giving Schwäbisch Hall short fields. Sustaining drives would also keep the Unicorns offense watching from the sideline.

For the Unicorns, this is the bridge between the regular season and the games that decide their year. The South title is already theirs.

Now Schwäbisch Hall can finish the job at home, complete a 12-0 regular season and roll into the playoffs without a blemish.
