Austria: Dacia Vienna Vikings win Battle of Vienna, roll over Danube Dragons

The Dacia Vienna Vikings had no trouble in downing crosstown rivals, the Danube Dragons 42-7 Sunday at Stadion Stadlau in Vienna.

The Vikings rolled up 408 yards in offense, scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter to crush Danube.

Vienna took a 28-0 halftime lead, increasing it to 35-0 in the third quarter before the Dragons could get on the board.

Vienna quarterback Garrett Safron threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another while running back Islaam Amadu rushed for two. Bernard Seikovits, Reece Horn and Maurcie Wappl all caught touchdown passes.

Chad Jeffries threw Danube’s lone touchdown pass to Felix Reisacher late in the fourth quarter to avoid the shutout.

The Vikings opened slowly but took control on their second possession as Safron led them on a 13 play, 88 yard drive that ate up seven minutes on the clock, capping it with a six yard run to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead.

Then with the defense playing “lights out football”, Vienna scored three more times in the second quarter as the Dragons could not get out of their own end of the field and kept giving the Vikings great field position, either on poor punting of failed fourth down conversions.

Trailing 28-0 in the third quarter, Danube went on an 11 play drive, reaching the Vikings 25 yard line where Jeffries was picked off and Vienna took over.

Safron made them pay, marching his team down to the Dragons six yard line and Amadu finished it off plunging in for his second touchdown of the game and increasing the lead to 35-0.

A bad punt from Vienna gave Danube the ball in decent field position in the fourth quarter and Jeffries was able to take advantage. Starting at the 50, he engineered a five play drive, finishing it with a touchdown pass to Reisacher.

Vienna came right back though as Reece Horn returned the kickoff to the Danube 44 and five plays later, Safron hit Wappl from 13 yard out for the game’s final touchdown.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 3-0 +while Danube drops to 1-1.
