UFL: Defenders cruise past Houston in record-setting victory
The D.C. Defenders (2-1) delivered a stunning performance at Audi Field, defeating the Houston Gamblers (1-2) 45-7, marking the largest margin of victory in UFL history. The Defenders showcased their dominance on both sides of the ball, leaving no doubt about their intentions this season.
Fast start sets the tone
D.C. wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, with leading rusher Deon Jackson breaking free for a 60-yard touchdown on the second play of the game. The Defenders quickly extended their lead to 11-0 with a 60-yard field goal from Matt McCrane. Houston struggled to find their rhythm, and D.C.’s defense capitalized on their mistakes. After an interception by Major Burns, McCrane added another field goal, pushing the lead to 14-0.
Defensive dominance
The Defenders’ defense continued to shine, with Gareon Conley intercepting Houston quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and returning it 70 yards for a touchdown, making it 21-0. Just before halftime, D.C. executed a clever trick play, allowing Briley Moore to score and extend the lead to 28-0, the largest halftime lead in UFL history.
Second half action
After the break, D.C. maintained their momentum, with McCrane kicking his third field goal. Houston finally got on the board in the third quarter with a touchdown pass from Tagovailoa to Justin Hall, marking their first passing touchdown of the season. However, D.C. quickly responded with a touchdown pass from Jordan Ta’amu to Moore, followed by a rushing touchdown from Abram Smith, sealing the 40-2 victory.
The Defenders’ defense was relentless, holding Houston to just 214 total yards and recording four sacks. With this dominant win, D.C. looks to continue their success next week against St. Louis at Audi Field.
