The Dresden Monarchs (10-0) put their perfect German Football League record on the line Sunday when they host the Hildesheim Invaders (6-2) at Heinz Steyer Stadium in a matchup between two GFL North teams already headed to the playoffs.

Dresden has rolled through its first 10 games and leads the North with 369 points scored and 132 allowed, while Hildesheim arrives with plenty of momentum after a 50-15 win over the Braunschweig Lions.

Dresden keeps finding ways to win

The Monarchs have yet to stumble this season, with their 24-22 road victory over defending champion Potsdam Royals highlighting the unbeaten run.

Last week, Dresden jumped out to a 23-0 halftime lead on the way to a 36-7 victory over the Berlin Rebels. The Monarchs defense did not surrender a point, with Berlin’s only touchdown coming on a pick six.

The offense has also shown it can adjust when needed.

Thompson gives Monarchs another option

With Rocky Lombardi dealing with a shoulder bruise, Casey Thompson took over against Berlin and accounted for four touchdowns, throwing three and running for another.

Receiver Michael Breuler caught two touchdown passes, while Montigo Moss gives the Monarchs another target. Tofunmi Lala and David Moore provide options in the running game, and Lala also returned a kickoff for a touchdown against the Rebels.

Hildesheim arrives with confidence

The Invaders have already secured their playoff berth and bring a productive offense into Dresden.

Against Braunschweig, quarterback Nelson Hughes completed 14 of 18 passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns as Hildesheim piled up 448 yards of offense. Paul Terjung caught three of those touchdown passes.

The Invaders have averaged 30 points per game this season, giving the Dresden defense one of its more interesting challenges.

Kitchens leads dangerous pass rush

The matchup between the Hildesheim defensive front and the Dresden offense could be crucial.

Kyle Kitchens leads the GFL with 12 sacks, while the Invaders defense produced six sacks, an interception and two forced turnovers against Braunschweig.

Hildesheim, however, cannot afford to hurt itself. The Invaders were penalized 11 times for 122 yards last week, mistakes that could be costly against an unbeaten opponent.

Perfect record faces another test

Both teams know they will be playing postseason football, but there is still plenty at stake.

The Monarchs want to protect their perfect season and hold their position atop the North. The Invaders get an opportunity to measure themselves against the division’s best team before the playoffs arrive.
