Finland: Helsinki Wolverines sign Jacob Wright as their new QB

The Helsinki Wolverines, Finnish finalists in 2021, have signed Jacob Wright from Averrett University (NCAA Div. III) as their new QB.

The 6’0″, 185 pound, 24 year-old Wright had originally signed to play with the Allgäu Comets of the German Football League in the spring of 2020 before the pandemic cancelled the season in Germany.

Wright is a Tallahassee, Florida native who accounted for 49 touchdowns over the course of his career at Averrett. He was named to the first team All-Conference team for his stellar senior year in 2019 in which he threw for 1,933 yards and 21 touchdowns. Wright is a true dual threat quarterback who also rushed for 850 yards and 13 touchdowns during his career as a Cougar.

The Wolverines new quarterback is motivated to get to Finland and turn last year’s runner ups into champions.

“I’m looking to achieve it all in the Maple League, I don’t want to lose a single game, I want to be the best player on the field every game and the best teammate for my team day in and day out. I saw the wolverines came one game win short of the championship and that’s my motivation to take them over the hump. And to the fans I can’t wait to meet you all, I’m going to give Helsinki my all and in return for the best post win celebrations”

The Wolverines had originally announced that former Elmshorn Fighting Pirates (Germany) and St. Benedictine University Ryan Sample would be their quarterback for their 2021 season in November of last year. The contract ended up falling through for reasons surrounding the corona virus and employment opportunities for Sample in the United States.

Head coach Mike Mattingly explains the reasons for the quarterback change:

“With the corona situation we knew this could happen but we’re very excited to have Jacob. He’s a playmaker with the ball in his hands, has great speed and rarely turns over the football. He’s a great fit for our offense and finding a guy like this is tough this late. He has everything it takes and more to help us win the Maple Bowl”
