Finnish Maple League: Christian Powell powers Porvoon Butchers past East City Giants in thrilling shootout

The reigning champion Porvoon Butchers improved to 2-0 in the Finnish Maple League, surviving a determined challenge from the East City Giants as they escaped Helsinki with a hard-fought 34-32 victory Thursday night.

Despite entering the game as favorites, the Butchers were pushed to the limit by an East City Giants squad that matched them score for score for much of the evening. In the end, a pair of missed extra points proved to be the difference in one of the league’s most entertaining games so far this season.

Fast start

The Butchers wasted little time establishing themselves early. Quarterback Donovan Isom came out sharp, throwing a touchdown to Amjad Al-rubaye while also adding a rushing score of his own. Although Porvoo built an early lead, the East City Giants refused to back down.

Quarterback K’Hari Lane continued his outstanding start to the season, completing 24 of 44 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns while adding 21 rushing yards and another score. His favorite target was Ronny Lindroos, who caught 10 passes for 85 yards, while Austin Brock hauled in two touchdown receptions and Sebastian Lugora added another scoring catch.

Powell takes over

As the game tightened in the second half, Porvoo leaned heavily on Christian Powell. The star running back carried the ball 21 times for 171 yards and two touchdowns, averaging more than eight yards per carry while repeatedly extending drives in key situations.

Isom finished 14-of-20 passing for 177 yards and a touchdown while adding 35 rushing yards and another score. JJ Jones III led the receiving corps with 50 yards, while Micky Kyei contributed a 42-yard reception.

Missed chances

The East City Giants actually finished with more offensive touchdowns, but two unsuccessful extra-point attempts ultimately proved costly.

Lugora rushed for 72 net yards and a touchdown, while Brock added 34 rushing yards to complement his two touchdown catches. Defensively, Eero Hellemaa intercepted an Isom pass, and Miro Viksten led the ECG defense in tackles as the unit kept one of the league’s most explosive offenses under pressure throughout the night.

For the Butchers, linebacker Timi Nuikka stood out with 9.5 tackles as the defending champions found just enough stops to remain unbeaten despite one of their toughest tests of the young season.
