Finnish Maple League standings: Crocodiles climb to first as Roosters surge into playoff position

A pair of Week 8 results reshuffled the Finnish Maple League standings. The Seinäjoki Crocodiles climbed into first place with a convincing 31-9 victory over the Wasa Royals, while the defending champion Helsinki Roosters continued their midseason revival by defeating the East City Giants 43-35 to jump from sixth to fourth. The idle Kuopio Steelers slipped to second, and the Porvoon Butchers remain well positioned with four weeks left in the 1o game regular season.

1. Seinäjoki Crocodiles (5-1)

The Crocodiles grabbed sole possession of first place by handling the Royals 31-9 in Vaasa. It was a timely response after their only defeat of the season, and it improved their record to 5-1. Earlier victories over the Helsinki Roosters, East City Giants, Tampere Saints, Porvoon Butchers, and Wasa Royals have put Seinäjoki in the driver’s seat entering the final two weeks.

2. Kuopio Steelers (5-2)

The Steelers had the weekend off but still remain firmly in contention for the regular-season title. Their only defeats have come against the East City Giants in Week 1 and the Butchers in a dramatic 43-42 loss. Wins over the Roosters, Saints (twice), Giants, and Royals leave Kuopio only one game behind first place.

3. Porvoon Butchers (4-2)

The Butchers continue to lurk just behind the top two. After opening the season with a loss to the Giants, they have beaten the Steelers, Crocodiles, and Saints, giving them victories over both teams currently ahead of them. Those head-to-head results could prove crucial over the final two weeks.

4. Helsinki Roosters (3-3)

No team has more momentum than the defending champion Roosters. Their 43-35 victory over the Giants was their third straight win and vaulted them from sixth to fourth in the standings. After an uneven start, Helsinki has rediscovered its rhythm at the perfect time and suddenly looks like a legitimate postseason threat.

5. Tampere Saints (2-5)

The Saints remain in the hunt despite sitting below .500. Wins over the Royals and Giants have been balanced by losses against the league’s top clubs. With two games remaining, Tampere needs a strong finish to climb back into playoff position.

6. East City Giants (2-6)

The Giants have been one of the season’s toughest teams to figure out. They own one of the league’s biggest upsets after knocking off the Steelers in Week 1, but last weekend’s 43-35 loss to the Roosters dropped them to 2-6. Their playoff hopes are fading, but they can still play spoiler.

7. Wasa Royals (2-4)

The Royals fell to the bottom of the standings after a 31-9 home loss to the Crocodiles. Earlier victories over the Roosters and Saints showed what they are capable of, but with only two wins through six games, Wasa has little margin for error if it hopes to stay in the postseason race.
