Germany: Potsdam Royals rally to edge Berlin Rebels 15-14 in thrilling season opener
In a dramatic German Football League season opener, the Potsdam Royals (1-0) narrowly defeated the Berlin Rebels (0-1) 15-14 at Mommsen Stadium in Berlin. The defending champions showcased their resilience, overcoming a 14-point deficit in the second half to secure a thrilling victory and take the first step toward a potential fourth consecutive championship.
Rebels dominate early
The Rebels came out strong, putting pressure on the Royals from the start. Quarterback Tyquell Fields led a long drive that culminated in a one-yard touchdown run, giving Berlin an early 7-0 lead. The Royals struggled to find their rhythm offensively, facing a relentless Rebels defense that kept them at bay. Just before halftime, Fields connected with receiver Nate Stewart, who found the end zone from 21 yards out, extending the Rebels‘ lead to 14-0. This was particularly sweet for Stewart, as he had played for Potsdam last season.
Royals fight back
After halftime, the Royals regrouped and began to find their offensive groove. Quarterback Xeaiver Bullock started making longer passes, and the Royals finally scored with just five minutes left in the game. Bullock’s pass to running back Heiko Bals resulted in a one-yard touchdown, narrowing the gap to 14-6. However, their two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving them trailing.
The Royals quickly got another chance when Fields fumbled the snap, allowing linebacker Joshua Wünsch to recover the ball for Potsdam. This turnover set up another scoring opportunity, and Bullock connected with young receiver Emanuel Bakare for a touchdown, bringing the score to 14-12. Again, the two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
Last-minute heroics
With just over a minute left, the Royals opted not to attempt an onside kick, trusting their defense to stop the Rebels. The strategy paid off when Berlin was forced to punt, giving Potsdam the ball at their own 38-yard line with 42 seconds remaining. Bullock calmly led the offense down the field, making crucial passes and runs. With six seconds left, Bals stepped up to kick the game-winning field goal, sealing the 15-14 victory for the Royals.
This thrilling comeback highlighted the experience and determination of the Royals, while the Rebels will look to bounce back in their next game.
