Germany: Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns overpower Saarland Hurricanes 49-13
The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (3-0) continued their winning streak in the effect® Energy GFL with a decisive 49-13 victory over the Saarland Hurricanes (0-2) at Ellenfeld Stadium. The Unicorns showcased their dominance, scoring four touchdowns in the first half and never looking back.
Unicorns start strong
The game kicked off with a bang as Kelley Joiner opened the scoring just 15 seconds in with a stunning 79-yard touchdown run, putting the Unicorns up 7-0 after the extra point by Toni Trefzer. The Hurricanes struggled to respond, despite a promising return by Joshua Youngblood. Their offense was quickly stifled by the aggressive Unicorns defense, which allowed only two first downs in the first half.
As the first quarter progressed, the Unicorns maintained control. Quarterback Lars Heidrich capped off a strong drive with a one-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 14-0. The Hurricanes continued to falter offensively, unable to find any rhythm against the relentless Unicorns defense.
Dominance continues
The second quarter saw the Unicorns further assert their dominance. Heidrich connected with Rayjuon Pringle for a 19-yard touchdown pass, making it 21-0. Just before halftime, Joiner struck again with a spectacular 73-yard run, bringing the score to 28-0 as the teams headed to the locker room.
The Hurricanes showed some signs of life at the start of the second half. Leon Doll caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Norman Douglas Jr., putting the Hurricanes on the board at 28-7. However, the Unicorns quickly answered back. Pringle returned a kickoff over 60 yards, setting up another touchdown pass from Heidrich, this time a 36-yarder, to make it 35-7.
Final quarter and injury concerns
The Hurricanes managed to score again with a 68-yard touchdown pass to Youngblood, narrowing the gap to 35-13. However, the Unicorns responded with a touchdown from Marvin Fuchs and another from Mathis Harang, sealing the game at 49-13.
With this victory, the Unicorns remain a formidable force in the league and will next face the Berlin Rebels in Berlin. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes will hit the road to take on the Straubing Spiders, looking to bounce back from this tough loss.
