Graz Giants capture first Austrian title in 18 years with Austrian Bowl XLI comeback

The Graz Giants ended an 18-year championship drought Saturday night, rallying past the heavy favorites, the Danube Dragons, beating them 16-14 in Austrian Bowl XLI at Datenpol Arena in Maria Enzersdorf. Leo Lipták kicked three field goals, including the winner with 1:55 remaining, as the Giants claimed the 11th Austrian championship in club history before 3,256 spectators.

Dragons race ahead

The Dragons opened the game with an impressive touchdown drive. Walter Kuhlenkamp moved the offense with his legs before connecting with Moritz Dungler on a big completion to the Graz five-yard line. Kuhlenkamp eventually finished the possession himself with a touchdown run, and Marcel Stefanek added the extra point.

The Giants answered immediately. Bastian Steinmair hit Jonas Dachs-Wiesinger on a deep pass during the drive, setting up Dean Opara’s touchdown run and Lipták’s tying extra point.

Danube responded once more as Kuhlenkamp found an uncovered Uzay Nafile for a touchdown, giving the defending champions a 14-7 advantage after three consecutive scoring drives to begin the game.

Giants defense changes the game

The early offensive pace disappeared once both defenses settled in.

A strong Edwin Morales III punt return gave the Giants favorable field position, but the Dragons kept them out of the end zone. Lipták converted the first of his three field goals to cut the deficit to 14-10.

Ben Hellett then intercepted Kuhlenkamp shortly before halftime, although Graz could not turn the takeaway into points.

The defensive battle continued through a scoreless third quarter. A failed fake field goal gave Danube an opportunity to extend its lead, but Morales intercepted Kuhlenkamp to end the threat. The Giants defense did not allow another point after the opening quarter.

Lipták delivers late

Lipták brought Graz within one point early in the fourth quarter, drilling a 45-yard field goal to make it 14-13.

The Giants moved into scoring range again late in the game behind another Steinmair completion to Dachs-Wiesinger and several strong runs from Opara. The Dragons defense prevented a touchdown, but Lipták calmly converted his third field goal to give Graz its first lead with 1:55 remaining.

Danube still had one final chance. Completions to Bernhard Ruscher and Nafile moved the chains, while Marvyn Acenas kept the drive alive with a fourth-down catch. Stefan Dirnberger recorded a crucial sack, however, and the Graz defense kept the Dragons outside field-goal range as time expired.

Steinmair was named the game’s most valuable player, but Lipták accounted for 10 of the Giants’ 16 points. Together with a defense that shut out Danube over the final three quarters, his late-game kicking brought the Austrian championship back to Graz for the first time since 2008.
