Graz Giants finish strong with road win over SWARCO Raiders Tirol

The Graz Giants (7-3) closed out the Austrian Football League regular season in impressive fashion Sunday, defeating the SWARCO Raiders Tirol (0-10) 34-17 on the road to secure third place in the standings and a home Wild Card playoff game.

After a tightly contested first half, the Giants took control by forcing key turnovers and capitalizing on the opportunities to pull away in the final two quarters.

Giants recover after early deficit

The home team struck first when Kenyatte Allen opened the scoring with a rushing touchdown, but Graz answered quickly behind running back Dean Opara to even the game.

A field goal briefly put the Raiders back in front, only for the Giants to respond once again. A field goal tied the contest before Jonas Dachs-Wiesinger found the end zone to give Graz a 17-10 halftime lead.

The back-and-forth opening half highlighted the evenly matched teams, but the visitors steadily gained momentum as the game progressed.

Turnovers swing the game

The Raiders came out aggressively after halftime and quickly tied the score when Allen connected with Mateusz Patalas, who turned a short pass into a touchdown with an impressive run after the catch.

The deadlock didn’t last long.

Dachs-Wiesinger answered almost immediately with his second touchdown of the afternoon to restore the Giants’ lead, and the defense took over from there.

An interception of Allen proved to be one of the game’s biggest turning points. Graz wasted no time cashing in as Fritz Bleckmann powered into the end zone to extend the advantage.

A late field goal completed the scoring and sealed a convincing 34-17 victory.

Playoff focus begins

The win gives the Graz Giants valuable momentum heading into the postseason after another composed performance on both sides of the ball.

Opara and Bleckmann supplied the production on the ground, while Dachs-Wiesinger’s two touchdowns provided the offensive spark. Just as importantly, the defense came through with timely takeaways that turned a close contest into a comfortable victory.

With third place secured, Graz will now host the Salzburg Ducks in the Wild Card Round next weekend as the road to the Austrian Bowl begins.
