Germany: Hildesheim Invaders roll past Regensburg Phoenix 45-13 for second straight lopsided win
The Hildesheim Invaders (2-0) continued their strong start to the German Football League season with a convincing 45-13 victory over the Regensburg Phoenix (0-2) on Saturday at the municipal sports facility on Weinweg. The Invaders showcased their offensive efficiency and defensive strength, dominating the game in front of around 350 spectators.
Invaders take control early
The Invaders wasted no time establishing their dominance. Kicker Paul Krause opened the scoring with a 17-yard field goal, giving Hildesheim an early 3-0 lead. Quarterback Nelson Hughes extended the lead to 10-0 with a one-yard touchdown plunge. Although the Invaders‘ offense struggled to find its rhythm at times, Hughes effectively moved the ball with short passes to his reliable targets, including Paul Terjung and Philipp Dolezal.
On the other side, the Phoenix found themselves under constant pressure from the Invaders‘ defense. The defensive line, led by Kyle Kitchens and Dean Vollbrecht, made it difficult for Regensburg to establish any momentum, resulting in a series of stalled drives.
Offensive explosion before halftime
As the first half progressed, the Invaders turned up the heat. Hughes connected with Terjung for a spectacular 52-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 17-0. The Phoenix struggled to respond, and Hildesheim capitalized on their mistakes. Just before halftime, Hughes found Matti Probst for a five-yard touchdown run, bringing the score to 31-0 at the break. Statistically, the Invaders dominated, racking up 386 total yards compared to just 73 for the Phoenix.
Regensburg shows resilience
Despite the daunting deficit, the Phoenix came out with renewed energy in the second half but to no end as the Invaders continued to assert their dominance, with Hughes throwing an eight-yard touchdown pass to Dolezal, extending the lead to 38-0. However, Regensburg finally found their footing when running back Nebechi Abana round a seam and broke free racing 63 yards to the end zone, marking the Phoenix‘s first points of the game.
The Invaders quickly responded, recovering a fumble and scoring again with a touchdown from Montrell Harris-Jackson, making it 45-6.
Final moments and looking ahead
In the final quarter, Phoenix quarterback Cameron Yowell connected with Jadon Gildersleeve for a 33-yard touchdown pass, bringing the score to 45-13. While the Invaders managed the game effectively from there, the Phoenix showed heart and determination, especially in the second half.
Hughes had an impressive performance, throwing for 381 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 85 yards and another score. Terjung was his favorite target, finishing with seven receptions for 172 yards and a touchdown. Pieter Solf added five catches for 78 yards and a touchdown, while Dolezal caught four passes for 42 yards and a touchdown.
For the Phoenix, Yowell threw for 117 yards and one touchdown, with Gildersleeve catching four passes for 61 yards and a touchdown. Abana was the game’s leading rusher, carrying the ball 15 times for 126 yards and a score.
After the game, Invaders head coach Marcus Herford praised his team’s performance, noting their ability to control the game. Meanwhile, Phoenix head coach Derrick Wilson emphasized the need for improvement as they look to bounce back in their next matchup. With this win, the Hildesheim Invaders remain at the top of the table, while the Regensburg Phoenix will need to regroup and focus on their upcoming challenges in the league.
