UFL: Houston Gamblers edge Birmingham Stallions 22-20 in thrilling finish
In a nail-biting contest, the Houston Gamblers (1-1) secured their first win of the season by defeating the Birmingham Stallions (1-1) 22-20 on Saturday night. The game showcased a dramatic back-and-forth battle, with both teams displaying resilience and determination.
First half struggles and late surge
The first half was marked by missed opportunities for the Gamblers. Quarterback Jordan Henderson, who struggled in Week One, looked more comfortable this time around. He showcased his mobility with an 18-yard scramble and connected with Cam Sutton for a 21-yard gain. However, Houston advanced inside the 10-yard line three times but could only manage two field goals from John Hoyland, giving them a 6-0 lead.
Birmingham had a chance to respond before halftime, and quarterback Matt Corral delivered. Operating in a two-minute offense, he completed six consecutive passes, marching the Stallions 55 yards in just five plays. Corral capped the drive with a touchdown pass to Jaydon Mickens, giving Birmingham a 7-6 lead at the break.
Stallions extend their lead
The Stallions picked up right where they left off in the second half. Anthony McFarland started the drive with a big 21-yard run, and on fourth-and-four, Corral found Justyn Ross for a 20-yard gain. He then connected with Deon Cain for a 12-yard touchdown, extending Birmingham’s lead to 14-6.
Henderson remained at quarterback for Houston after Hunter Dekkers was ruled out due to injury. He made an impressive throw on the run to Jontre Kirklin for 24 yards, and the Gamblers’ rushing attack began to find its rhythm. Jalen White and Marcus Yarns both had positive runs, helping Houston regain momentum.
Houston fights back
Despite their struggles in the red zone, the Gamblers managed to chip away at the Stallions’ lead with another field goal from Hoyland, making it 14-9. Houston’s defense stepped up, with Carlton Johnson making a crucial interception, giving the Gamblers a chance to take the lead.
As the rain intensified, Houston leaned on its playmakers. Henderson connected with Justin Hall, who showcased his elusiveness with an 18-yard gain. After an illegal formation penalty negated a potential go-ahead field goal, the Gamblers capitalized on first-and-goal from the three-yard line. Jalen White powered through for a touchdown, putting Houston ahead 19-14.
Dramatic finish
Corral responded late in the fourth quarter, leading the Stallions on a methodical drive. He completed four straight passes for 51 yards, and a pass interference penalty set up first-and-goal. McFarland punched it in, giving Birmingham a 20-19 lead, but they failed to convert the two-point attempt.
With just under two minutes left, Houston took over with a chance to win. Facing fourth-and-six, Henderson found Armani Rogers for a crucial conversion. As time expired, Hoyland drilled a 50-yard field goal, sealing the victory for the Gamblers.
Henderson finished with 186 passing yards, while the rushing attack totaled 174 yards, led by White with 82 yards. Corral threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns but was hampered by two costly interceptions. Following this thrilling win, the Gamblers will head to DC next Saturday, looking to build on their momentum.
