Japan: Obic stays perfect as X League Premier playoff race heats up

The Obic Seagulls (5-0) remain the only unbeaten team in the Japanese X League Premier, but the opening round of the Fall Series tightened the playoff race behind them as the Fujitsu Frontiers, Panasonic Impulse, Nojima Sagamihara Rise and All Mitsubishi Lions all came away with victories.

The Seagulls needed a late touchdown to escape the Elecom Kobe Finies 24-21, while the Frontiers pulled away from IBM BIG BLUE 41-19. Panasonic continued its turnaround with a 33-0 shutout of Fujifilm Ebina Minerva AFC, the Rise rolled past OrientalBio Silver Star 31-7 and the All Mitsubishi Lions overwhelmed the SEKISUI Challengers 48-21.

Obic survives a scare

The Seagulls looked headed for their fifth straight win after carrying a 17-6 lead into the fourth quarter against the Finies, but Elecom Kobe came roaring back.

A blocked punt returned for a touchdown cut the lead to 17-14 before Taii Masagaya intercepted Pierce Holley and returned it 59 yards to the Obic three. Xaevier Bullock then powered into the end zone to put the Finies ahead 21-17.

Holley answered. He marched the Seagulls back downfield and hit Yuki Sakuma for a 39-yard touchdown with 59 seconds left to steal back the lead. Holley finished with 363 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Sakuma caught seven passes for 157 yards and the winning score.

Fujitsu answers in a big way

The Frontiers (4-1) bounced back from their loss to Obic by turning a tight game against IBM BIG BLUE (2-2) into a 41-19 win.

IBM had battled back to within 21-19 late in the third quarter behind Yuki Masamoto and Reece Horn. Then Kazuki Kimura grabbed the ensuing kickoff and raced 99 yards for a touchdown.

From there, the Frontiers took over, scoring 20 unanswered points. Tsubasa Takagi threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns, while Daniel Barker hauled in five passes for 145 yards and three scores.

Panasonic keeps climbing

After opening the season 0-2, the Panasonic Impulse (3-2) have now ripped off three straight wins.

The defending champions overwhelmed Fujifilm Ebina Minerva AFC (2-2) 33-0 in a game called with 34 seconds remaining in the third quarter because of worsening thunder.

Keita Suda threw three touchdown passes as Panasonic raced to a 26-0 halftime lead. The defense was just as dominant, holding Fujifilm Ebina to 68 total yards and two first downs.

Rise make another move

The Nojima Sagamihara Rise (2-2-1) followed their upset of the Finies before the summer break by hammering OrientalBio Silver Star (0-4) 31-7.

Kurt Palandech threw three touchdown passes, two to Chase Cota, while the Rise piled up 269 rushing yards. Nojima Sagamihara scored three touchdowns in just over seven minutes to jump ahead 21-0 and never let the Silver Star back into the game.

The Rise have now gone from an 0-2-1 start to consecutive victories and are firmly back in the postseason hunt.

Lions roar back into contention

Perhaps the biggest statement of the weekend came from the All Mitsubishi Lions (2-2), who exploded past the SEKISUI Challengers (0-4-1) 48-21.

After falling behind 7-0, the Lions ripped off 27 unanswered points before halftime. Isaiah Khalil Malcome rushed for 100 yards on only six carries, Demarcus Irons Jr. threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, and Tetsuya Nakano added two rushing touchdowns.

The defense intercepted three passes after halftime as the Lions turned the game into a rout.

Playoff race gets even tighter

Obic remains the team everyone is chasing at 5-0, with Fujitsu right behind at 4-1. But the picture underneath them changed considerably during the first Fall Series weekend.

The Elecom Kobe Finies have now dropped two straight after starting 3-0, while Panasonic has gone the other direction with three consecutive victories. The Rise have won two straight, and the All Mitsubishi Lions have pushed themselves back into the race.

With only six teams advancing to the postseason, the Fall Series opener did little to settle the playoff picture. Instead, it packed the middle of the standings even tighter — and left unbeaten Obic as the one team everyone is still trying to catch.
