Maple League semifinals: Butchers host Roosters with title-game berth on the line

The Porvoon Butchers (8-2) welcome the Helsinki Roosters (6-4) to Porvoo Central Field Saturday in a Maple League semifinal that will send one of them into Maple Bowl XLVII against the Seinäjoki Crocodiles.

The defending champion Butchers finished first in the regular season, but their path wasn’t nearly as smooth as last year’s. One of their two losses came against the Roosters, giving Helsinki plenty of reason to believe it can pull off another one.

The Roosters shook off three losses to put together a six-game winning streak before the Crocodiles stopped them in the regular-season finale.

Butchers get healthy at the right time

The Butchers head into the semifinal with their lineup as healthy as it has been all season.

That gives Porvoon plenty of firepower. Christian Powell was the league’s only running back to break 1,000 rushing yards and finished with 18 touchdowns. Luukas Eerola has also emerged as one of the offense’s biggest weapons.

The production hasn’t stopped on defense. Timi Nuikka led the league in tackles, Dal’Mont Gourdine topped the sack standings and Kaapo Viuha finished first in interceptions.

The spotlight, though, will fall on quarterback Donovan Isom. His size gives the Butchers another threat on the ground, but his passing has been inconsistent. If the line gives him time and Porvoo can keep its offense balanced, the Roosters will have plenty to handle.

Roosters have weapons of their own

The Roosters have battled injuries throughout the season, but their offense has shown signs of getting healthier at the right time.

Running back Freddie Brock and receiver Corintheus Edmonds have both picked up their production down the stretch. The intriguing piece is Brandon Gwinner, the former Butchers quarterback who could take on a larger role alongside Ambro Urjansson.

That gives Helsinki another option to throw at a Porvoon defense loaded with playmakers.

The bigger concern comes on the other side of the ball. Defensive lineman Will Lydle saw limited action in the previous game, while defensive back Zach Wright left the loss to the Crocodiles early. The Roosters will need all the help they can get against a Butchers offense that led the league in points and yards.

Roosters know Porvoo can be beaten

On paper, the top-seeded Butchers have plenty working in their favor. They’re healthy, they’re at home, and their roster features league leaders on both sides of the football.

But this isn’t an opponent they can dismiss.

The Roosters have already beaten the Butchers once this season, and Helsinki’s six-game winning streak showed how dangerous this team can be when it gets rolling.

Now the stakes are much higher. The Crocodiles are already waiting in Maple Bowl XLVII. Saturday afternoon in Porvoo, the defending champions and a familiar challenger will decide who joins them.
