Las Rozas Black Demons capture 2nd straight Spanish championship

The Las Rozas Black Demons defended their Spanish title in dramatic fashion this past weekend beating arch rivals the Osos Rivas 27-23 in Spanish Bowl XXX in a game that saw a last second interception to seal the win.

The Black Demons seemingly had control of the game early in the second half after jumping out to a 24-7 lead, but Osos clawed their way back into it in the final two quarters and were threatening before Las Rozas defensive back Andrei Luca capped an MVP performance by picking off Osos quarterback Russell Tabor with no time left for the win.

Las Rozas took charge early as quarterback Theo Landers marched his team down to the Osos Rivas two yard line and then punched the ball in himself to give his team a 7-0 lead. The Black Demons then recovered a fumble on the very next Osos drive and converted it into a field goal to boost the lead to 10-0 going into the second quarter.

In the early stages of the second period, the Black Demons dealt their opponents a new blow as Landers connected with a wide open Jorge García Vargas, who romped into the end zone to extend the lead to 17-0. Osos finally got a break recovering a fumble by Las Rozas running back Daniel Romero inside the Black Demons 40 yard line. Tabor then hit wide receiver Gary Tyler who made a spectacular end zone grab for a 24 yard touchdown which narrowed the lead to 17-7 going into the break.

Las Rozas extended the lead again early in the third quarter after halting an Osos Rivas drive and then marching from their own 17 yard line down to the Rivas five. Romero then atoned for his fumble by weaving his way into the end zone to give the Black Demons a 24-7 lead.

That’s when Tabor caught fire first hitting David Girón in the back of the end zone for a 17 yard touchdown to close the gap to 24-14.. Then early in the final stanza, he marched his team down to the Black Demons six yard line and Álvaro Guitián booted a 23 yard field goal and suddenly they were within a touchdown, 24-17.

However, Las Rozas responded with a field goal of their own from the toe of Antonio Sarria who extended the lead to 10 points again, 27-17.

Osos Rivas were not done. Tabor guided his team down to the 13 yard line and then threaded the ball to Tyler again who scored to narrow the lead to 27-23 after a failed two-point conversion attempt. There was still plenty of time left on the clack.

The Black Demons marched into Osos Rivas territory only for Landers to fumble the ball on the 30 yard line and opening the door for one final drive. But that’s when Luca stepped up to make the game-winning interception triggering the celebrations.
