LIVESTREAM CFL: Calgary Stampeders @ Saskatchewan Roughriders, Oct. 3, 03:30 CET (3:30 am, 9:30 pm Oct. 2 ET)

REGINA — The Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders are in the thick of a West Division logjam, making Friday night’s matchup critical as the regular season winds down.

Calgary is coming off back-to-back victories over the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

Saskatchewan has been trending in the opposite direction with two straight losses to Winnipeg and BC.

With a win, the Roughriders will clinch a playoff spot and claim the season series thanks to a 40-37 victory back in Week 3.

Here’s three keys to victory for both teams ahead of Friday’s 9:30 p.m. ET kickoff, which can be watched on TSN in Canada and on CFL+ in the U.S. and internationally.

CALGARY STAMPEDERS

1. PIVOT(AL) POSITION

Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. has turned in consecutive strong performances, throwing for 779 yards and five touchdowns over the past two weeks. The last time he faced the Riders’ defence, he passed for 254 yards. How he fares against a secondary allowing 314.3 yards per game could help dictate the outcome.

2. NEWEST 1,000 YARD MAN

With 246 receiving yards in the Stamps’ two wins over the REDBLACKS, receiver Jalen Philpot has surpassed 1,000 yards for the first time in his career. He’ll now be counted on to help alleviate the Riders’ defensive pressure as one of Calgary’s main targets.

3. FOOT ON THE GAS

Over the last four games, the Stamps have surrendered an average of 19 points in the fourth quarter. Correcting it starts with players like defensive back Anthony Johnson shutting down big gains, and has to continue with the offence managing the clock.

SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

1. AJ OUELLETTE RE-HITTING HIS STRIDE

Saskatchewan has totalled 30 points in their two most recent losses. The good news is running back AJ Ouellette returned against the Lions and put up 77 yards on 19 carries. Ouellette can play a big part in helping the offence get back into rhythm this week against a Stampeders front surrendering 112.9 yards per game on the ground.

2. BETTER IN THE RED ZONE(S)

The Riders punched in touchdowns in just two of their five red zone opportunities last week. On the defensive side of the ball, they allowed touchdowns on four of five opportunities. No team has had more snaps inside the 20-yard line than Saskatchewan’s 128, and it’s up to quarterback Trevor Harris and Ouellette to help make sure they convert.

3. GETTING IN SYNC DOWN THE STRETCH

Harris completed 78.8 per cent of his passes last week, and is getting closer to having his full complement of receiving weapons healthy, with Daniel Wiebe returning to the lineup this week. With four games remaining, the veteran will look to build on that success, starting against a division rival this week.

NEED TO KNOW:

  • Calgary has scored 85 points in their past two games.
  • Ouellette needs 73 rushing yards to reach 4,000 over his career.
  • The Roughriders lead the league in time of possession, averaging 31:30 per game.
