The Toronto Argonauts (8-6) take a three-game winning streak into Princess Auto Stadium Friday night to face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (7-6) in a matchup featuring the CFL’s most productive passing attack against the league’s stingiest pass defense.

Toronto has already secured a playoff berth but heads west looking to improve a 4-6 road record. Winnipeg, meanwhile, returns from a bye having won seven of the past eight meetings between the clubs, including a 30-21 victory over the Argonauts on July 10.

Kelly has Toronto offense flying

The Toronto quarterback threw for 373 yards in last week’s victory over the Edmonton Elks, giving him a league-leading 10 games with at least 300 passing yards this season. He has piled up 1,135 yards and seven touchdown passes over his past three games and is averaging 341.2 yards per game.

That production has helped the Argonauts lead the CFL with 359.1 passing yards per game.

David Ungerer III and Tyler Kahmann are both closing in on their first 1,000-yard receiving seasons, needing 82 and 85 yards, respectively.

But Winnipeg presents a much different challenge. The Blue Bombers have held opposing quarterbacks to a league-low 64.7 percent completion rate and are allowing just 272.2 passing yards per game, also best in the CFL.

Brown gets another shot at Argos

Dru Brown could make his fifth start of the season for Winnipeg in place of Zach Collaros, and Toronto has seen what he can do.

Brown completed 25 of 31 passes for 339 yards and a touchdown in the Blue Bombers’ July win over the Argonauts. He is 3-1 against Toronto in his career, has thrown 11 touchdowns against just two interceptions and has topped 300 yards in all four of those starts.

The Winnipeg offense can also lean on Brady Oliveira, who leads the CFL with 1,084 rushing yards and has topped 1,000 for a fifth consecutive season. Oliveira has rushed for at least 100 yards in three of his past four games, and the Blue Bombers are 22-5 when he reaches triple digits.

Argos finding ways to win

Toronto’s latest victory was anything but conventional.

The Argonauts beat Edmonton despite finishing with minus-one rushing yard, possessing the ball for just 21:15 and running 37 fewer offensive plays. Their defense repeatedly slammed the door when it mattered, stopping the Elks on five of six red-zone trips.

Now Toronto’s high-powered passing game runs straight into the CFL’s toughest pass defense, with Winnipeg looking to complete the season sweep on its home field.
