Frankfurt Galaxy entered the inaugural European Football Alliance season expecting to contend for a championship. Ten weeks later, they head into their regular-season finale simply trying to make sure a turbulent season does not end on Sunday afternoon in Prague.

Galaxy (3-6) visit the already-eliminated Prague Lions (2-7) at Stadion FK Viktoria Žižkov with a place in next weekend’s EFA BIG4 playoffs on the line. For Frankfurt, the easiest mathematics are also the most appealing: win and they are in. For Prague, there is no postseason left to chase, but there is still the opportunity to wreck somebody else’s.

And there is some history behind that prospect.

A year ago, it was Prague desperately chasing the first playoff appearance in franchise history when Frankfurt ended those hopes. Now the Lions have the opportunity to return the favor in their final home appearance of 2026.

Galaxy limping toward the finish line

Few teams in the EFA need the regular season to end more than Frankfurt.

Head coach Thomas Kösling’s team appeared to have steadied itself in early July when a 31-24 road victory over the Paris Musketeers lifted Galaxy into third place. Instead of becoming a springboard, however, it was Frankfurt’s last victory.

Galaxy have since lost three straight, falling 38-5 to the Munich Ravens, surrendering a stunning 61 points in a 61-41 home defeat to Raiders Tirol and then getting hammered 47-9 by Nordic Storm last weekend. Over those three games, Frankfurt has been outscored 146-55.

The collapse against Tirol prompted Frankfurt to make perhaps the most dramatic move of its season.

Quarterback Ethan Garbers, brought to Europe after a career at UCLA, was released with two games remaining and replaced by former Texas A&M and Incarnate Word quarterback Zach Calzada. The move was specifically described by Kösling as an attempt to give the team a new impulse in its push for the BIG4. Earlier in the season, Garbers had said anything short of a championship would be disappointing. Instead, Frankfurt arrived at the quarterback change with a losing record and its postseason future in jeopardy.

Calzada could hardly have drawn a tougher European debut. He arrived shortly before last weekend’s meeting with Nordic Storm and was immediately thrown against one of the league’s two dominant teams. Frankfurt managed only nine points in the 47-9 loss.

Sunday should offer a much fairer indication of what Calzada can provide. He has now had another complete week of practice and faces a Prague defense that has allowed an EFA-worst 361 points through nine games.

The bigger problem may be keeping him upright. Injuries have taken a heavy toll on Frankfurt’s offensive line, something that becomes particularly troublesome when attempting to integrate a quarterback into an offense in the middle of a playoff race.

Prague has nothing to lose

The Lions know exactly what that feels like.

Prague began the season with five consecutive defeats before finally breaking through in spectacular fashion, beating Raiders Tirol 45-44 in Innsbruck and then stunning Paris 36-35 in overtime two weeks later.

Those victories briefly transformed the Lions from EFA afterthought into a legitimate BIG4 contender. Quarterback Jaylon Henderson was at the center of the turnaround. Against Paris, Henderson completed 25 of 35 passes for 296 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for another 98 yards. He then delivered the game-winning two-point conversion in overtime.

The momentum did not last. Munich routed Prague 48-12 and last weekend the Raiders avenged their earlier defeat with a 41-29 victory at Žižkov, officially eliminating the Lions from playoff contention.

Prague now has the freedom — and perhaps the danger — of playing with nothing at stake except pride.

There is one significant absence. Leading receiver William Patterson was injured against Tirol and will miss the finale. That removes Henderson’s most established weapon and puts additional pressure on Matyáš Bílý, Martin Havelka and the rest of the Prague receiving corps.

Still, Henderson gives Prague a player capable of making a game chaotic. His combination of arm strength and running ability has repeatedly created problems once plays break down, and that could be especially important against a Frankfurt defense that has allowed more than 40 points in consecutive games.

First meeting was not as comfortable as it looked

Frankfurt has already beaten Prague once this season.

When the teams met at the PSD Bank Arena on June 21, Galaxy raced to a 28-6 halftime advantage. Garbers threw touchdown passes to Normen Schumm and Adrià Botella Moreno, while Frankfurt appeared to have the game completely under control.

Prague refused to disappear.

Henderson found Bílý for a 43-yard touchdown in the third quarter and Adam Žouželka added another score as the Lions cut into the deficit. A blocked punt later gave Prague another opportunity deep in Frankfurt territory before the Galaxy defense finally shut the door and preserved a 31-18 victory.

That game should provide sufficient warning for Frankfurt. Prague may own the worst defensive numbers in the EFA, but the Lions have demonstrated that they can score enough points to make life uncomfortable for teams in the crowded middle and bottom of the standings.

Frankfurt has several ways in — but only one it wants

The playoff mathematics are unusually generous to Galaxy.

A victory guarantees Frankfurt a place in the four-team postseason. According to the club’s published BIG4 scenarios, even a defeat does not necessarily eliminate them. Frankfurt can still qualify with a loss of fewer than 23 points, while results in Sunday’s Paris Musketeers–Raiders Tirol game create additional routes into the BIG4: a Paris victory would help Galaxy, as would a Tirol victory by more than 13 points.

But for a team that considers itself one of European football’s premier organizations, backing into a four-team playoff from a six-team league would hardly provide much reassurance.

Frankfurt is already 3-6. Lose Sunday and Galaxy could conceivably arrive at next weekend’s BIG4 with a 3-7 record and a four-game losing streak.

That makes this more than a qualification game for Kösling’s team.

Frankfurt needs to demonstrate that it actually belongs in the postseason.

Prague, meanwhile, gets one last afternoon in front of its home supporters and the chance to turn a disappointing 2-7 campaign into a memorable finale. The Lions cannot save their own season anymore, but they can still make Frankfurt’s considerably more uncomfortable.

A year ago, Galaxy slammed the playoff door on Prague.

On Sunday, the Lions get their chance to push back.
