LIVESTREAM GERMANY: Frankfurt Universe @ Marburg Mercenaries, September 5, 16:00 CET, (4 pm, 10 am ET)

The Frankfurt Universe (1-8) will take on the Marburg Mercenaries (2-7) in this final game of the German Football League regular season for both teams.

The Universe could face relegation next as they will have the GFL South’s worst record. Across the field, Marburg looks to finish up and down the regular season and use the offseason to rebuild for next season.

Marburg’s offense is led by German quarterback Sonny Weishaupt. Weishaupt was one of two homegrown starters this season in the German Football League along with Unicorn’s gunslinger Alex Haupert. Weishaupt put up 1,481 yards and 10 touchdowns passing the 10,000 career passing yards mark earlier this summer. Today the Marburg’s veteran passer will look to involve Niklas Fengler and Philip Einchorn in the passing game. Tight end Phillip Eichhorn’s size and Fenglers speed give the Mercenaries options in the passing game. On the ground expect Melvin Detroy to get 10-15 carries as starter Marcus Cox remained side-lined as of last week.

Defensively, Robert Hayward leads the charge for Marburg with 65 tackles this season, good for fifth in the league. Hayward’s sure tackling and speed have been one of the bright spots for Marburg this season. Behind Hayward, Aaron Seward, Calvin Shuld and the rest of the Mercenaries defensive unit aim to shut down an inconsistent Frankfurt passing attack.

The Frankfurt Universe go into the season finale after a long regular season, losing all nine of their games by an average of 49.8 points. Some positives going into the final game are quarterback Glenn Cuiellette and his connection to receivers Brandon Butler Jr. and Aaron Edelmann. In the running game, fans can anticipate the former Texas Southern quarterback (NCAA D1) to take the ball himself and get the speedy youngster Quaderman Sloan involved.

Defensively, the Universe has struggled mightily giving up a dismal 58 points per game. One bright spot however continues to be outside linebacker Marius Markert. The versatile defender can play the run or pass equally well, wrapping up to make tackles and covering running backs out of the backfield all season. Last week, Markert and British defensive tackle Jack Brennan helped Frankfurt slow down a skilled Munich offense.

Marburg entered the season as a dark horse to make the playoffs as their roster of German talent seemed to be complemented by imports joining from top college programs. The Mercenaries season has not gone as planned as injuries to key players held back a talented squad. Frankfurt enters today’s game looking for its first win of the season with an uncertain future ahead in the German Football League.
