LIVESTREAM GERMANY: Marburg Mercenaries @ Munich Cowboys, August 7, 16:00 CET (4 pm, 10 am ET)

The Marburg Mercenaries (2-4) will travel to Dante Stadium in Munich to take on the Munich Cowboys (3-3) in this GFL South matchup.

The Mercenaries are looking to bounce back from a disappointing performance last week, while Munich needs to win this game if they are to stay on track for the postseason.

With the departure of head coach Garren Holley, the Cowboys will be led the remainder of the season by veteran assistant coach and former NFL player Tony Moore. Moore’s offense features another veteran in quarterback Justin Sottilare. Sottilare, however, didn’t finish their last game as Luca Raue went under center for the Cowboy’s final two drives against the Unicorns. Whoever is at quarterback will have options as former Oklahoma University (NCAA D1) receiver Michiah Quick and Kai Silbermann are proven receivers in the GFL South. Out of the backfield, former rugby standout Brandon Watkins showed his power racking up 54 total yards both catching and running the ball effectively.

Defensively, Nadine Nurasyid will take over as coordinator. Nurasyid is an experienced assistant who previously coordinated the Straubing Spiders defense and won a national championship as a player for the Munich Cowboys ladies team. Nurasyid will be looking for veteran linebacker Ryan Newell to step up to the daunting task of matching up against one of the GFL’s top running backs in Marburg’s Marcus Cox. In the trenches, defensive end Dominic Seigel aims to continue his success as he’s put up a league-leading six sacks so far this season.

Marburg’s offense struggled last week as they managed on six points against the Saarland Hurricanes. Fans can anticipate German quarterback Sonny Weishaupt to bounce back and play well against the Cowboys today. However, Weishaupt surely will lean on running back Marcus Cox in this one. Cox’s speed and power make him one of the most exciting running backs to watch in all of Europe, averaging 107 yards a game. If Marburg can establish a run game, anticipate Weishaupt use play-action and target speedy Aaron Seward deep.

Defensively Marburg’s secondary must be ready for the Cowboy’s high-flying passing attack. Belgian defensive back Ruben De Ruyter’s playmaking will be missed as one of Marburg’s best defenders will miss the remainder of the season because of a shoulder injury. Expect Marvin Hart to step up in his absence in the Mercenaries secondary. Linebacker Robert Heyward’s 45 tackles along with Malte Klein’s play will be crucial in slowing down a Munich offense looking to put up big numbers at home once again.

Under new leadership, this resilient Munich team expects to bounce back and play well, as they look to return to the playoffs. On the other sideline, Marburg is eager to show that last week was a fluke and they belong with the GFL’s best.
