The Berlin Rebels (2-5) return to Mommsenstadion Saturday facing the toughest assignment in the German Football League as they host the unbeaten Dresden Monarchs (9-0) with both ends of the GFL North standings still very much in play.

The Rebels remain within reach of a playoff spot, but last week’s 37-10 loss to the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes left them needing a quick response. Dresden, meanwhile, is closing in on securing first place in the North and home-field advantage in the postseason.

Rebels look to bounce back at home

Little went right for the Rebels in Kiel last weekend. They took an early 3-0 lead but surrendered 37 of the next 44 points as the Hurricanes pulled away.

Quarterback Tyquell Fields finally got Berlin into the end zone with a 12-yard run in the third quarter, but the Rebels could not build on it.

Now they return home against an opponent that handled them comfortably earlier this season. Dresden won the first meeting 42-14, making Saturday an opportunity for Berlin to show how much it has changed since June.

Dresden keeps finding ways to win

The Monarchs were pushed hard last weekend but emerged with their perfect record intact, beating the Düsseldorf Panther 30-20.

Rocky Lombardi and Montigo Moss remain at the heart of the passing game. Lombardi has completed 168 of 244 attempts for 2,349 yards and 14 touchdowns through nine games, while Moss has 58 receptions for 1,084 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Dresden has also added quarterback Casey Thompson, receiver Michael Breuler and offensive linemen Matthew Hendersen and Deon Mutsvanemoto for the stretch run, although running back Yazan Nasser has been lost to injury.

Rebels face their biggest test

The difference in records makes Dresden the clear favorite, but the Rebels cannot afford to look at Saturday as anything other than an opportunity.

Head coach Greg Seamon expects Berlin to make the Monarchs work for it.

“Unpredictable is a bit of the right word for what awaits us in Berlin,” Seamon said, emphasizing the need for discipline against a physical Rebels team.

For Berlin, an upset would completely change the complexion of its season. For Dresden, victory would mean another major step toward locking down the GFL North and taking an unbeaten record deeper into August.
