The Regensburg Phoenix (2-5) return home on Saturday looking to build on last week’s victory over the Allgäu Comets as they host the Saarland Hurricanes (1-7) in an important German Football League matchup. Both teams are fighting to improve their position in the GFL South standings, making this a key opportunity to gain momentum heading into the final weeks of the regular season.

Phoenix finding their rhythm

The Phoenix are coming off one of their most complete performances of the season after earning a 29-18 road victory over the Allgäu Comets.

Nebechi Abana led the way with two rushing touchdowns as the ground game controlled the tempo throughout the afternoon. Cameron Yowell added a touchdown on the ground, while Nicolas Hayes contributed another score as Regensburg answered every challenge from the Comets.

The defense also played a major role in the victory. Matthew Hull and Nico Ziaja each came away with interceptions, and the unit consistently created favorable field position that allowed the offense to dictate the game.

The challenge this week will be delivering that same level of execution for four quarters.

Ground game will be the key

Last week’s win showed exactly what the Phoenix want their offense to look like.

Abana repeatedly moved the chains with physical running, allowing Regensburg to control possession while taking pressure off Yowell. When the offense avoided mistakes, it consistently put together long, productive drives.

Against the Hurricanes, protecting the football and maintaining that balance will once again be priorities. If the Phoenix establish the running game early, they’ll put themselves in position to control both the clock and field position.

Hurricanes seeking response

The Hurricanes arrive after a 33-6 loss to the Munich Cowboys, a game that was much closer than the final score suggested for much of the first half.

Saarland’s defense kept the contest competitive early before turnovers, a punt-return touchdown by Gabriel Boccella and several short fields allowed Munich to gradually pull away. Gabriel Cunningham scored the Hurricanes’ lone touchdown late in the third quarter, but the offense struggled to sustain drives throughout the afternoon.

Head coach Graig Kuligowski’s team has continued to compete despite its 1-7 record and remains capable of making games difficult with disciplined defensive play.

For Regensburg, however, the formula is clear. If the Phoenix can build on last week’s physical rushing attack, limit mistakes and allow their defense to create opportunities, they’ll have an excellent chance to earn consecutive victories for the first time this season and continue building confidence heading into the stretch run.
