Germany (1-0) and Finland (1-0) collide Saturday at Jahnstadion in Langenfeld with a simple equation hanging over their final Group C game of the 2026/27 IFAF U19 European Tackle Football Championships: win and move on to the 2027 medal round.

Both teams arrive unbeaten, but they took very different roads to Saturday’s showdown. Germany overwhelmed Hungary 79-7 in April, while Finland had to battle to the finish before escaping with a 16-13 victory over Poland.

Germany looking to make its mark

The emphatic opening win put Germany in control immediately, but Saturday provides a much tougher measuring stick.

Head coach Peter Daletzki evaluated 68 players during a camp in Düsseldorf before settling on his 45-man roster. He made clear that Germany sees the game as an opportunity to reestablish itself among Europe’s leading U19 programs.

There is plenty of history behind that ambition. Germany ended Finland’s early dominance by taking the European title in 1998, successfully defended it and later captured a third championship in 2008. Its most recent medal was silver in 2015.

Finland brings championship history

Finland knows this stage just as well. The Finns won the first U19 European championship in 1992 and successfully defended the crown in 1994 and 1996. More recently, they have claimed bronze at each of the past two tournaments.

Assistant head coach J-P Kuusisto expects the trip to Germany to provide a major test for a roster featuring first-time internationals. With Finland’s domestic season just completed, he said the team enters the matchup in good game shape and ready for the challenge.

Everything rides on Saturday

There is no need for complicated tiebreaker math. The winner takes Group C and advances to play for the medals in 2027. The loser drops into the group competing for fourth place overall.
