LIVESTREAM Sweden: TECHNICAL ISSUES HAVE MADE THIS GAME UNAVAILABLE Örebro Black Knights @ Carlstad Crusaders, Aug. 29, 17:00 CET (11:00 ET)

Saturday, the Swedish Superserien continues for week two of their season. The Örebro Black Knights will be visiting the Carlstad Crusaders.  Both teams played close games last week and will be looking to improve on their season debuts as they try to find their identity in this short season.

The visiting Örebro Black Knights won last week 21-7 against the Uppsala 86ers. Quarterback Jake Sisson completed 8 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown in the first half before leaving the game with an injury. Following Sisson’s exit the Örebro’s offense was largely ineffective. The Black Knights ran the ball and used receivers Jimmy Palmborg and  Dylan Reede at quarterback. These adjustments and great play on defense helped them secure the win.

Örebro announced late in the week that they had signed British quarterback Dammy Agbabiaka who spent the 2019 season with the London Olympians. He had signed to play with the German Football League division 2 team, the Solingen Paladins but the coronavirus pandemic changed that.

Örebro will no doubt still be relying heavily on running backs Kasper Wedberg and Gustav Skeppner who combined for 121 yards and a touchdown in the win over Uppsala.

Head Coach Tim Speckman commented on his new quarterback:

“Dammy is a hungry, talented and smart player. He had hoped and prepared for a season in the GFL2 but now gets a new platform with us to show off his skills and great work ethic. We feel that he is a perfect piece of the puzzle in our team building and are excited and grateful to have him with us on our journey. “

Defensively, the Black Knights played a fantastic game. Örebro’s defensive squad held Uppsala to 80 yards of total offense and had two turnovers. Brothers Josh and Eric Murphy played well combining for 5 tackles. Eric Murphy had 3 pass breakups to shut down the 86ers struggling passing attack. Look for the the Black Knights to play well of defense again against Carlstad. The Black Knights also added German offensive lineman Lukas Maier this week. Maier is an athletic tackle who started for the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns last season. He should be able to help the Örebro running game.

For the Crusaders, they will be playing their first home game of the year and looking for their first win. They fell short to the Stockholm Mean Machines losing 18-12. Their offense didn’t score any points until the 4th quarter of last week’s game. Their offense was in a tricky position given that their American quarterback Danny Farley was injured in practice before the game. The Crusaders relied on Alf Ransjo a quarterback from their U19 team. Look for the Crusaders offense to be much different if Farley can play this week. Head Coach Bill Kennedy explained last week’s quarterback situation.

“It’s hard to put into words all the things that went through my mind when we had to make the decision that Danny could not play. Everything happened over a 24 hour period. I cannot say enough about Alf Ransjö. He finds out Friday afternoon that instead of backing up our import QB, he is starting.”

Defensively, the Crusaders kept themselves in the game limiting the Mean Machines offense and forcing an interception and a fumble. Their defense was led by linebacker Mattias Eriksson who had an impressive 10.5 tackle performance. Defensive Lineman Aslan Zetterberg also chipped in with 5.5 tackles and a sack. Kennedy on this week’s matchup:

“All in all, we can recognize the areas we need to improve on. We will work on those. We will face an excited and talented Örebro team this weekend. Our goal is simply to improve.”

Both teams this week are facing quarterback issues with injuries so look for the running game and defense to become the most vital part of the game if both American quarterbacks can’t play. These are two evenly matched teams looking to find their identity and build some momentum in the early part of the season.
