Louisville Kings upset D.C. Defenders in stunning comeback
In a thrilling United Football League matchup, the Louisville Kings (4-4) pulled off a remarkable upset against the D.C. Defenders (5-3), winning 30-13 and keeping their playoff hopes alive. The Kings overcame a halftime deficit and dominated the second half, scoring 27 unanswered points to secure the victory.
Kings Strike First, Defenders Respond
The game started with a surprising twist as the Defenders were held scoreless on their opening drive for the first time this season. D.C. quarterback Jordan Ta’amu was sacked by Josiah Bronson, pushing them out of field goal range. The Kings capitalized on the momentum, with running back James Robinson breaking off impressive runs of 19 and 21 yards. However, a missed field goal by Tanner Brown kept the score at 0-0 after a scoreless first quarter.
Louisville finally broke through in the second quarter when quarterback Chandler Rogers connected with Tarik Black for a 16-yard gain, followed by a screen pass to Jaden Shirden for 15 yards. Brown redeemed himself with a 48-yard field goal, giving the Kings a 3-0 lead.
The Defenders quickly answered back with a spectacular 81-yard touchdown pass from Ta’amu to Javon Antonio, putting them ahead 6-3 after a failed two-point conversion. Ta’amu then led a strong drive, culminating in a 20-yard touchdown pass to Ty Scott, extending their lead to 13-10 before halftime.
Turning point in the second half
The momentum shifted dramatically after a crucial hit on Rogers late in the first half. Following a personal foul penalty on Derrick Roberson, Rogers responded with a touchdown pass to Black, pulling the Kings within three points at 13-10.
Louisville opened the second half with a bang, tying the game at 13-13 with a 49-yard field goal from Brown. The game took a decisive turn when Jalen Wydermyer forced a fumble on the kickoff, giving the Kings a short field. Rogers capitalized, finding Black again for a touchdown, putting Louisville ahead 20-13.
Defenders struggle in the second half
The Defenders struggled to regain their offensive rhythm in the second half, managing only six plays and two punts. Ta’amu faced pressure and threw a critical interception to Keaton Ellis, which set up another touchdown run by Robinson, extending the Kings‘ lead to 27-13.
As the game wound down, the Kings continued to dominate, forcing turnovers on D.C.’s final three possessions. A 49-yard field goal from Brown capped off the scoring, sealing the Kings‘ impressive comeback.
Louisville’s defense was relentless, forcing four turnovers and holding the Defenders scoreless in the second half. The Kings finished with 145 rushing yards and Rogers threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Tarik Black led the offense with five catches for 49 yards and two touchdowns.
The Defenders, despite Ta’amu’s season-high 353 passing yards, will look to regroup as they prepare for a rematch against the Kings next Saturday in Louisville.
