Ireland: Louth Mavericks cap remarkable rise with first Shamrock Bowl title

The Louth Mavericks completed one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Irish American football history this past weekend, defeating the defending champion Belfast Trojans 40-16 in Shamrock Bowl XXXVIII at Dubarry Park in Athlone to capture the club’s first national championship.

Making their first appearance in the Shamrock Bowl, the Mavericks stunned the six-time champion Trojans, who entered the game looking to defend the title they won a year ago. Wide receiver Oisin Finn was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after helping lead Louth to the historic victory.

A remarkable journey

Founded in 2012, the Mavericks‘ path to the championship was anything but straightforward. The club first reached the Premier Division in 2018 before being relegated. Following the COVID pandemic, the organization voluntarily dropped to Division 2 to rebuild from the ground up.

That decision paid off. The Mavericks captured the 2025 Harp Bowl to earn promotion back to the Premier Division for the 2026 season, then completed an extraordinary campaign by winning Ireland’s biggest prize in their first season back among the country’s elite.

Much of the club’s resurgence has come under head coach Ty Henry, the former Dublin Rebels quarterback who previously guided the Rebels to a Shamrock Bowl championship before taking over the Mavericks.

New champions crowned

The Trojans came into the final as the defending champions and one of Ireland’s most successful programs, but the Mavericks seized control before halftime, forcing a series of turnovers that they converted into points on the way to a convincing 40-16 victory.

For a club that chose to rebuild rather than take shortcuts, the championship represents the culmination of years of steady progress. From relegation and a self-imposed reset to lifting the Shamrock Bowl trophy, the Mavericks have written one of the best success stories in recent Irish American football history.
