Munich Cowboys pull away from Spiders to stay in GFL South race
The home team Munich Cowboys (4-2) overcame an early special teams setback and used a dominant second-half performance to defeat the Straubing Spiders (0-5) 41-14 in a German Football League matchup at Dante Stadium in front of 1,027 spectators.
Fast start on both sides
Despite temperatures reaching well above 30 degrees Celsius, both teams opened with energy.
Munich struck first when quarterback Nick Semptimphelter connected with Gabe Boccella on a 51-yard touchdown pass to give the Cowboys an early 7-0 lead.
The Spiders answered in spectacular fashion. Edward-Jonathan Mangum returned a Cowboys punt all the way for a touchdown, tying the game at 7-7 and briefly shifting momentum toward Straubing.
That would be as close as the visitors would get.
Cowboys take control
The second quarter belonged to Munich.
Mustafa Othmann-Kaldun powered into the end zone to restore the lead before Semptimphelter found Maximilian Mayer for another touchdown to extend the advantage to 21-7.
The Spiders continued to battle and found a spark just before halftime. Raleigh-Benjamin Yeldell connected with Jordan Pouncey for a touchdown that cut the deficit to 21-14 and kept Straubing within striking distance heading into the break.
Turnovers change the game
The second half proved decisive.
While Munich continued to move the ball efficiently, the Spiders struggled with turnovers and consistency. Maximilian Mittasch added field goals from 23 and 38 yards as the Cowboys gradually increased their lead to 27-14.
A series of mistakes by Straubing, including multiple lost fumbles, repeatedly handed favorable field position to the home team. Those extra possessions allowed Munich to control the tempo and keep pressure on the visitors.
Boccella finishes it off
As the game entered the fourth quarter, Boccella put the result beyond doubt.
The receiver hauled in his second touchdown catch of the afternoon from Semptimphelter to make it 34-14 before adding a third score with just 12 seconds remaining to complete a three-touchdown day.
For Munich, the victory improves the Cowboys to 4-2 and keeps them firmly in the hunt near the top of the GFL South standings. For the Straubing Spiders, the search for a first win of the season continues after another difficult afternoon despite several promising moments.
