Munich Ravens sign All-Star receiver Markell Castle

The Munich Ravens of the European League of Football (ELF) have signed All-Star receiver and Newberry College (NCAA, DII) alumnus Markell Castle for the 2023 season.

Castle most recently played in the Italian Football League for the Milano Seamen. In just eight games in 2022, the 5 ‘10″, 180-pound receiver put up 1,073 yards and scored 17 touchdowns on just 45 receptions, scoring a touchdown on nearly every other reception. He had spent two seasons in the German Football League prior to that, first with the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes in 2019 and then with the pass-happy Cologne Crocodiles in 2021. In those two seasons, he amassed 124 receptions, 1,973 yards and 25 touchdowns leading him to be one of the most highly regarded receivers in Europe.

Raised and schooled in South Carolina, Castle attended Newberry College between 2015–2018. Over the course of his four-year career Castle reeled in 162 receptions for 2484 yards and 24 touchdowns. His ability as an explosive playmaker led to multiple awards and a host of all-team selections including All-Super Region 2, All-SAC and All-ESAC.

Castle will now be playing on Europe’s biggest stage and teamed up with some of its most recognizable names. The Ravens will surely lean on Castle to make a splash in their inaugural year, and if history is anything to go by, he won’t disappoint.

Sean Shelton, Director Sports Operations of the Munich Ravens commented on the new signing:

‘Markell is a live big play! He is capable of both stretching a defense vertically and gaining yards after the catch. He’s another piece of the puzzle of an offense that will be a lot of fun for us and our fans this upcoming season.’
