Obic Seagulls edge Fujitsu Frontiers 20-13 to remain unbeaten in X League Premier

The Obic Seagulls (4-0) stayed perfect and took sole possession of first place in the X League Premier on Saturday, holding off a late rally from the Fujitsu Frontiers (3-1) for a 20-13 victory in a matchup between the league’s last two unbeaten teams.

The win improved Obic to 4-0, while Fujitsu suffered its first loss of the season.

Obic answers every challenge

The Frontiers struck first midway through the opening quarter as Masanari Kagawa powered into the end zone from one yard out to give Fujitsu a 7-0 lead.

Obic needed only one play to answer.

Quarterback Pierce Holley connected with Tay Cunningham on a 72-yard touchdown strike that immediately tied the game and shifted the momentum back to the home side.

Fujitsu regained the lead with a pair of field goals from Koji Nosho, but Obic delivered another response just before halftime. Holley capped a late drive with a one-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Watanabe, sending the Seagulls into the locker room with a 14-13 advantage.

Defense finishes the job

The second half belonged to the Obic defense.

While the unit repeatedly forced Fujitsu off the field, Takeji Yamazaki added two field goals to stretch the lead to 20-13.

The Frontiers mounted one final drive in the closing minutes and reached the Obic eight-yard line with a chance to tie the game. Instead, Seagulls Cole Coleman stepped in front of a pass in the end zone to seal the victory.

Holley finished an efficient afternoon by completing 20 of 30 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. Cunningham was his favorite target, hauling in six receptions for 149 yards, including the game-changing 72-yard score. Watanabe added three catches and a touchdown.

For Fujitsu, Tsubasa Takagi completed 18 of 34 passes for 184 yards but was intercepted once and sacked three times. Riki Matsui led the receiving corps with seven catches for 74 yards, while Kagawa accounted for the team’s lone touchdown.

Keita Naruse paced the Obic defense with eight tackles, while Coleman delivered the biggest play of the afternoon, preserving an unbeaten start and giving the Seagulls sole possession of first place heading into the summer break.
