Porvoon Butchers knock off Seinäjoki Crocodiles to tighten Maple League race

The Porvoon Butchers (4-2) strengthened their position near the top of the Finnish Maple League standings on Saturday, handing the Seinäjoki Crocodiles (4-1) their first loss of the season with a hard-earned 20-7 victory at Wirokit Stadion. Played in rainy conditions, the matchup turned into a defensive battle, with the Butchers making the key plays on both sides of the ball to earn an important road win.

Defense sets the tone

Wet weather made life difficult for both offenses from the opening kickoff, and points were at a premium throughout the first half.

The Butchers suffered an early setback when defensive lineman Jesse Vuoksenturja left the game with an injury, but the visitors didn’t allow it to disrupt their defensive effort.

After a scoreless opening quarter, Porvoon finally broke through late in the second. Quarterback Donovan Isom connected with Christian Powell, who turned the reception into the game’s first touchdown to give the Butchers a 7-0 halftime lead.

Big plays make the difference

The third quarter remained a defensive struggle, with three consecutive punts before the Crocodiles created a momentum swing.

The Seinäjoki defense forced an Isom fumble, and Eetu Mäki-Maunus recovered the loose ball to give the home team excellent field position. Christopher Fowler quickly took advantage, finding Juho Kasari for a touchdown that tied the game at 7-7. Primarily known for his work on defense, Kasari made the most of an offensive opportunity by turning the catch into the Crocodiles’ only touchdown of the afternoon.

The tie didn’t last long.

Early in the fourth quarter, Isom capped a 15-yard rushing touchdown drive to put the Butchers back in front, and Powell sealed the victory with another touchdown in the closing minutes. Powell finished with 82 rushing yards on 18 carries and added a touchdown reception, giving him two scores on the day and 10 for the season.

Road win reshapes standings

The Butchers’ defense bounced back impressively after allowing 41 points in the teams’ first meeting earlier this season, limiting one of the league’s top offenses to just seven points.

Linebackers Timi Nuikka and Jussi Mäkelä each recorded eight tackles to lead the defensive effort, while Dal’Mont Gourdine added the team’s lone sack.

For the Crocodiles, Arttu Blomqvist carried much of the offensive workload, rushing for 74 yards on 25 carries while adding eight receptions for 54 yards. Fowler completed 17 of 29 passes for 184 yards and one touchdown.

The victory moves the Butchers into a tie with the Crocodiles in the standings, adding another layer of intrigue to the race for playoff positioning as the regular season heads into its final weeks.
