Finland: Porvoon Butchers look to bounce back against Helsinki Roosters

The defending champion Porvoon Butchers (3-1) return home Friday night looking to respond after suffering their first loss in nearly two years as they host the Helsinki Roosters (1-3) in one of the marquee matchups of Finland’s Maple League weekend. Although Porvoon enters the game as the favorite, recent results have shown the defending champions can be pushed, setting up what could be one of the most entertaining games of the month.

Butchers seek quick response

The narrow 41-38 loss to the Seinäjoki Crocodiles ended an impressive run for the Butchers, but they also know several of their victories this season have come by the slimmest of margins. Wins over the East City Giants and the Kuopio Steelers were decided by one and two points, proving there is little room for error.

Porvoon will also be without JJ Jones III, who was injured in last week’s game. Joni Lindholm is listed at tight end in Jones’ place, while Sébastien Sagne has been added to the roster and could make an impact.

Quarterback Donovan Isom and running back Christian Powell remain the driving forces behind the league’s highest-scoring offense. The duo has combined for 13 touchdowns, while Luukas Eerola continues to be Isom’s favorite target in the passing game.

Roosters searching for momentum

The Roosters arrive with renewed confidence after earning their first victory of the season, a 27-6 win over the East City Giants. Even so, Helsinki has averaged just 16.25 points per game, well behind Porvoon’s league-leading 40.75.

Ambro Urjansson will need plenty of support from receivers Corintheus Edmonds and Rene Rautiainen if the visitors hope to keep pace. Loan addition Matias Hyytiäinen also joins the receiving corps after spending the early part of the season with the Carinthian Lions.

Adding another storyline to Friday’s matchup, Zachary Wright returns to Porvoon, this time wearing a Roosters uniform after starring for the Butchers defense for several seasons.
