Potsdam Royals dominate Ravensburg Razorbacks in battle of conference champions

The Potsdam Royals continued their impressive start to the German Football League season, defeating the Ravensburg Razorbacks 34-7 at TeleData Stadium in Weingarten on Sunday. In a matchup between the reigning conference champions, Potsdam gradually took control after a competitive opening quarter and never looked back, improving to 4-0 while handing Ravensburg a tough home defeat.

First quarter stays tight

The game began as a defensive struggle, with both teams finding it difficult to establish offensive rhythm. Ravensburg appeared poised to strike first after moving deep into Potsdam territory, but Aashari Crosswell came up with one of the game’s biggest plays, intercepting a pass from Broghean McGovern at the one-yard line.

That turnover completely changed the momentum. The Royals responded with an impressive 99-yard drive that ended with Xeaiver Bullock finding Chrisman Kyei for the game’s first touchdown and a 6-0 lead.

Defense fuels the Royals

The visitors began pulling away in the second quarter. Heiko Bals capped a quick scoring drive with a one-yard touchdown run as Potsdam extended its advantage to 12-0.

Meanwhile, the Royals defense took over. Crosswell, Devin Hembry, and Ronaldo Tomasello all came away with interceptions before halftime as the unit consistently disrupted Ravensburg’s offensive plans. Alan Steinorth, Ryan Minniti, and the defensive front kept pressure on McGovern throughout the first half, helping send Potsdam into the break with a two-score lead.

Third quarter breaks it open

Any hopes of a Razorbacks comeback disappeared after halftime.

Bullock engineered another scoring drive and connected with Bals for a touchdown pass to push the lead to 20-0. Moments later, Fabrizio Umitelli intercepted McGovern and returned the ball 25 yards for a touchdown, turning a competitive game into a rout.

Bullock then delivered perhaps the biggest offensive play of the afternoon, finding Maximilian McLeod on a 50-yard touchdown strike. By the end of the third quarter, the Royals had built a commanding 34-0 lead.

Royals send a message

The only bright spot for Ravensburg came in the fourth quarter when Anthony Harris scored the team’s lone touchdown.

Otherwise, it was a dominant performance from Potsdam. The Royals outgained the Razorbacks 433-160, recorded 26 first downs compared to nine, and forced four interceptions while limiting one of the GFL’s most productive offenses to just seven points.

With the victory, the defending champions remain unbeaten and head into their bye week carrying significant momentum before a highly anticipated showdown with the undefeated Hildesheim Invaders. For Ravensburg, the focus now shifts to regrouping after a difficult afternoon against one of the league’s premier teams.
