Potsdam Royals hand Braunschweig Lions crushing defeat in GFL home opener
The Potsdam Royals (2-0) made a statement in their first home game of the 2026 Effect Energy GFL season, overwhelming the Braunschweig Lions (0-3) 75-3. In front of over 2,100 fans at the Luftschiffhafen stadium, the Royals showcased their offensive firepower and defensive prowess, leaving no doubt about their championship ambitions.
Royals start strong
From the opening whistle, the Royals looked sharp and focused, a stark contrast to their narrow win against the Berlin Rebels in their previous game. Quarterback Xeaiver Bullock wasted no time getting the offense rolling, connecting with Swiss wide receiver Milan Spiller for a 41-yard touchdown pass on the first drive. The Royals continued to dominate, with Bullock throwing touchdowns to young star Emanuel Bakare and US receiver Maximilian McLeod, quickly building a 32-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
The Braunschweig defense struggled to contain the Royals’ high-octane offense, which utilized deep passes and varied formations to keep the Lions on their heels. The Potsdam defense was equally impressive, stifling the Lions’ attempts to establish any rhythm. Key defensive players like Joshua Wünsch, Ruben De Ruyter, and Ronaldo Tomasello made their presence felt throughout the game.
Turning point with a defensive score
The game took a decisive turn just before halftime when Ryan Minniti intercepted a pass from Braunschweig quarterback Ryon Thomas and later handed the ball off to Tomasello, who returned it 88 yards for a touchdown. This play pushed the score to 54-0 at halftime, effectively sealing the game for the Royals.
Even after the break, Potsdam showed no signs of letting up. Touchdowns from Chrisman Kyei, Peter Martin, and Kassim Tiamiu further extended their lead. Junior quarterback Moritz Richter capped off the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown run, bringing the final score to 75-3.
Looking ahead
With this dominant victory, the Royals have firmly established themselves as a team to watch in the league. They will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup against the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes. Meanwhile, the Lions will need to regroup quickly as they face the Hildesheim Invaders in their upcoming game, hoping to turn their season around.
