Quarterfinals Set for IFAF World Flag 2026 on Saturday
The quarterfinal lineups are set for Saturday at the IFAF Flag Football World Championships Düsseldorf 2026 after the sport’s longest winning streak came to a dramatic end at the city’s custom-built Flag Football Complex.
American Samoa ends historic USA winning streak
The defending champion and world number one United States men’s national team – unbeaten since 2014 – was stunned by IFAF World Flag debutant America Samoa, suffering a 38-32 defeat. It is the first time USA has lost in more than 50 competitive games since falling to Austria in the 2012 world title game. Their five straight world titles, two continental crowns and victory at The World Games in 2022 remain, but the streak that has set the gold standard is over.
“I told our players that we couldn’t be in awe or be intimidated,” said American Samoa head coach Sterling Carvhalo. “We played the football that we practiced and prepared for. Our guys stayed disciplined defensively and offensively and we took what they gave us.”
Men’s quarterfinal field takes shape
American Samoa’s quarterfinal reward as surprise Group A winners over USA is a clash with Canada, while the United States take on Japan, who eliminated world number two Austria in the group stages. European champion Italy will take on Germany before a passionate home crowd at the sold-out venue and Mexico faces Panama.
Olympic berths on the line
The top two teams in both the men’s and women’s tournament will join pre-qualified USA at LA28 as the first to competitively earn qualification for the flag football’s Olympic Games debut. The IFAF World Flag 25 semifinals will also be played on Saturday, meaning the first of those golden tickets to LA28 will be punched.

USA women draw host Germany
In the women’s quarterfinals, defending champion the United States will have to overcome the home field advantage likely to spur on Germany. World number one Mexico will meet Spain and there is an intriguing clash as silver medalists from their respective 2025 continental tournaments Canada and Austria are in opposition.
Great Britain earns Panama matchup
Great Britain won a thrilling game to decide the competitive Group C with a one-point win over Austria enough to top the standings. They now face a Panama team that GB head coach Jack Reed guided to the bronze medal at The World Games in 2022.
