The Baltimore Ravens say they are “aware” of three charges, including a charge of family violence, against wide receiver Rashod Bateman, according to a statement shared with multiple outlets. The charges, which were uncovered by multiple outlets on Friday, date to an incident in early June.
Georgia court records obtained by multiple outlets indicate Bateman is facing three charges: a battery-family violence misdemeanor (his first offense), a count of reckless conduct and first-degree criminal damage to property. All three charges list June 3 as the date of the offense.
Per the statement from a Ravens spokesperson, the team has spoken to Bateman and the league to address the issue.
“We are aware of the situation involving Rashod and have been in direct communication with him. We notified the league office and have been cooperating throughout the process. As this is a pending legal matter, we will not have further comment,” the spokesperson said in the statement.
Bateman allegedly smashed the window of a car belonging to the mother of his child, according to court documents obtained by TMZ Sports, which was first to report the charges. Bateman’s 3-month-old child was allegedly in a car seat in the back row.
Bateman reportedly turned himself in the same day. The incident took place in Walton County, located just east of Atlanta.
Bateman’s lawyer told TMZ the charges and the situation were taken “out of context.”
“It is unfortunate that a personal family situation has been taken completely out of context for sensational reasons. We will let the court process play out and the facts will come out at that time,” Bateman’s lawyer, Jordan Siev, told the outlet.
Bateman, who has spent his entire NFL career with the Ravens, is entering his sixth year in the league. However, earlier on Friday, Bateman had been potentially targeted for a trade by the Houston Texans, who were searching for a player to replace Jayden Higgins after the wideout tore his ACL this week.
