UFL: Columbus Aviators soar to victory over Gamblers with strong first half

The Columbus Aviators (3-3) secured a much-needed victory against the Houston Gamblers (1-5) on Friday night, riding a strong first half to a 24-17 win. The Aviators avenged their previous loss to the Gamblers, showcasing a powerful ground game and a resilient defense, especially in the second half.

Aviators strike first

Columbus opened the game with a methodical 14-play, 74-yard drive that consumed over eight minutes. Running back John Lovett was instrumental, racking up 35 rushing yards before powering in a three-yard touchdown to give the Aviators an early lead.

The Gamblers quickly responded, with quarterback Nolan Henderson scrambling for a crucial 37-yard gain on a third down. Marcus Major capped off the drive with a 13-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 7-7. This marked the third consecutive week Houston scored on their opening drive, echoing their strong start from the previous matchup.

Columbus takes control

The Aviators wasted no time regaining the lead, as quarterback Jalan McClendon orchestrated another impressive drive. He connected with Gunnar Oakes and Tay Martin for key first downs before Antwane Wells scored on a nine-yard run, putting Columbus ahead 14-7.

After a field goal from Houston‘s John Hoyland narrowed the gap to 14-10, McClendon struck back with a 52-yard pass to Tay Martin, setting up a seven-yard touchdown run by Zaquandre White. The Aviators closed the first half with a commanding 21-10 lead, with McClendon completing 12 of 15 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown.

Second half adjustments

With Henderson sidelined due to injury, Taulia Tagovailoa took over as quarterback for Houston. The Gamblers managed to score a touchdown in the third quarter, with Tagovailoa connecting with Lawrence Keys for a 21-yard score, bringing the game to 24-17.

Columbus attempted to extend their lead with a 49-yard field goal, but Ryan Coe missed, giving Houston a chance to tie the game. However, the Aviators‘ defense stepped up, forcing a three-and-out and regaining possession.

Defensive stand seals the win

As the game wound down, Houston‘s defense made a critical stop, forcing Columbus to punt. The Gamblers found themselves trailing by seven with the ball at their own 17-yard line and one timeout remaining. Emergency quarterback Jontre Kirklin entered the game after Tagovailoa was injured, but his drive ended in disaster as Kedrick Whitehead Jr. intercepted him, sealing the victory for Columbus.

The Aviators finished the game with 179 rushing yards, led by Lovett’s 63 yards. Tay Martin also had a standout performance, recording 100 receiving yards. Defensively, Kenny Willekes shone with six tackles, a sack, and two tackles for loss.

For Houston, Anthony Hines III led all players with 11 tackles, while Eugene Asante contributed 10 tackles and two tackles for loss. Following this victory, the Aviators will head on the road for a matchup against St. Louis next Friday night.
