Undefeated Obic Seagulls take control as X League Premier playoff race begins to take shape
The Obic Seagulls (4-0) head into the summer break as the only unbeaten team in the Japanese X League Premier after edging the Fujitsu Frontiers 20-13 in a showdown between title contenders, while the race for the six playoff spots remains wide open after four rounds of the spring schedule.
With half the season complete, only three points separate second through sixth place, leaving little room for error as the league prepares for the fall portion of the campaign.
Obic stands alone
The biggest statement of Round 4 came when Obic handed Fujitsu its first loss of the season.
Quarterback Pierce Holley threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns in the 20-13 victory, including a 72-yard strike to Tay Cunningham, who finished with six catches for 149 yards and a touchdown. Cole Coleman sealed the win with a game-ending interception in the end zone as Obic improved to 4-0 and 12 points in the standings.
The loss dropped Fujitsu to 3-1, tied on nine points with the Elecom Kobe Finies, who suffered their first defeat of the season in a surprising 20-7 road loss to the Nojima Sagamihara Rise. Nojima’s first victory lifted the club back into the playoff picture after an 0-2-1 start.
Middle of the pack tightens
The race behind the leaders remains incredibly close.
Panasonic Impulse continued its turnaround after an 0-2 start by shutting out the Tokyo Gas Creators 29-0 for a second straight victory. The defending Rice Bowl champions have climbed back to fourth place at 2-2.
Fujifilm Ebina Minerva AFC also strengthened its postseason hopes with a convincing 28-7 win over OrientalBio Silver Star. Chevin Cordeiro completed 19 of 24 passes for 287 yards and four touchdowns, all to Jason Matthew Shash, who caught 12 passes for 170 yards.
Meanwhile, IBM BIG BLUE stayed level with Fujifilm Ebina at 2-1 after defeating the Sekisui Challengers 30-13. Jaiya Wright threw for a touchdown and ran for another before Yuki Masamoto added a scoring pass. Defensively, IBM slammed the door with four fourth-quarter interceptions.
Pressure builds
The standings are beginning to separate, but the playoff race remains anything but settled.
Obic sits alone at the top at 4-0, followed by Fujitsu and Elecom at 3-1. Panasonic has climbed back to fourth at 2-2, while Fujifilm Ebina and IBM occupy the final two playoff spots with matching 2-1 records.
Below the cut line, Nojima has revived its postseason hopes at 1-2-1, while Tokyo Gas, All Mitsubishi Lions, Sekisui, and OrientalBio all face increasing pressure heading into the second half of the season.
With only six teams advancing to the postseason, every game from here on carries playoff implications, and the margin for error is quickly disappearing.
