Dresden Monarchs defeat Berlin Rebels to remain unbeaten in GFL play

The Dresden Monarchs stayed perfect in the German Football League with a 42-14 victory over the Berlin Rebels in front of nearly 7,500 fans at Heinz-Field in Dresden, improving to 4-0 while dropping the Rebels to 1-3.

Despite the comfortable final score, the game featured several momentum swings before the Monarchs finally pulled away in the second half.

Monarchs capitalize after early mistake

The game got off to a shaky start for Dresden when quarterback Rocky Lombardi threw an interception that was picked off by Deji Agbana. Fortunately for the home side, the Monarchs defense immediately responded and prevented Berlin from turning the turnover into points.

Lombardi quickly made amends. On Dresden’s next possession, he connected with Montigo Moss for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead following Florian Finke’s extra point.

The Monarchs defense continued to dominate, limiting the Rebels offense and giving Lombardi plenty of opportunities to attack. Early in the second quarter, Lombardi found Moss again for his second touchdown of the day, extending the lead to 14-0.

Berlin hangs around

Although Dresden controlled much of the first half, mistakes prevented the game from becoming a blowout early.

Lombardi threw a second interception, this time to former Monarchs player Jonas Gacek. Once again, however, the Rebels were unable to capitalize as Dresden’s defense held firm.

The score remained 14-0 at halftime, with the Monarchs clearly in control but still searching for consistency on offense.

Offense comes alive

The third quarter saw Dresden finally hit another gear.

Lombardi scored on a touchdown run before later connecting with Moss for the receiver’s third touchdown of the afternoon. Suddenly the lead had grown to 28-0.

To their credit, the Rebels refused to quit. Quarterback Tyquell Fields answered with a spectacular touchdown pass of nearly 50 yards to Nate Stewart, cutting the deficit to 28-7 and giving Berlin a spark.

When Lombardi threw his third interception late in the quarter, the visitors appeared poised to make things interesting.

Defense delivers the knockout blow

The biggest sequence of the game came early in the fourth quarter.

The Rebels drove to the goal line and had four chances to score, but the Monarchs defense produced a huge goal-line stand, denying Berlin any points.

That stop effectively ended the comeback hopes.

Dresden’s offense responded with touchdowns from Janne Särkelä and David Moore to put the game out of reach. Filip Uderhardt added a late touchdown for the Rebels, but the outcome had already been decided.

With the 42-14 win, the Monarchs remain unbeaten and continue to establish themselves as one of the top teams in the GFL heading into next week’s matchup with the Braunschweig Lions.
