Düsseldorf Panther earn first win with gritty road victory over Kiel Baltic Hurricanes
The Düsseldorf Panther (1-3) picked up their first victory of the German Football League season on Saturday, defeating the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (1-4) 14-7 on the road in a defensive battle at Kilia Stadium.
In a game dominated by defense, field position, and difficult weather conditions, the Panther showed patience and composure, overcoming a second-half deficit to secure an important road win.
Defenses dominate early
From the opening kickoff, both defenses took control.
The Panther threatened on their first possession after a 39-yard run by Gennadiy Adams put them deep into Kiel territory, but the Hurricanes defense stiffened and forced a missed field goal attempt.
The rest of the first quarter followed a similar pattern. Neither offense found much rhythm as punts, penalties, and strong defensive play kept points off the board.
Linebackers Thiago Lessow, AJ Starcke, and Rob Revels were particularly active for the Hurricanes, helping keep the game scoreless through the opening 12 minutes.
Panthers strike before halftime
The breakthrough finally came late in the second quarter.
After a long drive that covered 87 yards and consumed significant clock, quarterback Isaiah Weed found Kevin Joosten in the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful, but the Panther carried a 6-0 lead into halftime.
The Hurricanes had opportunities of their own but were unable to convert, including a blocked field goal attempt and another missed kick before the break.
Kiel briefly takes control
The home side finally found momentum in the third quarter.
Led by quarterback PJ Settles and aided by strong runs from Lorenz Rotermund, the Hurricanes marched down the field before Settles connected with Anousheh Fulford on a 13-yard touchdown pass. Fulford added the extra point to give Kiel a 7-6 lead.
For the first time all afternoon, the crowd sensed the game turning in the home team’s favor.
Panthers answer late
The response from Düsseldorf proved decisive.
Weed engineered another lengthy drive before finding Daniel Pedro for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The visitors then successfully converted a two-point conversion when Weed connected with James Okike, extending the lead to 14-7.
The Panther defense took care of the rest, coming up with a late interception and denying the Hurricanes any final comeback opportunity.
The victory allows the Düsseldorf Panther to move out of the bottom spot in the standings, while the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes are left to regroup after a frustrating defeat in front of their home crowd.
